Jungle Carpet

Hopefully picking up one next week some time and just wondering if anyone has any final words of advice for these guys. The one I'm picking up is a 2 year old male, can be temperamental at times, and is feeding on large mice.

Congrats! Your first Carpet? Be careful, they're more addicting than corns. :)
From what I've heard, out of the Carpets, Jungles can be the more tempermental ones. Then again, Carpets in general can be kinda bitey when younger.

I would recommend getting a hook, & use that to pull him out of the cage, & handle him (after he's settled in).
Is he eating large mice, or jumbo mice? I would think at 2yrs old, he should be on a bit bigger prey than that.
If he's been underfed, that could contribute to his grumpiness.
Be sure to post pics when you get him.
Jungles are one of my fave of the Carpets. :) I have two.

BTW, I' have limited experience, there are others here that have way more experience than I do, hopefully they will chime in. :)

Yup :) my first JC, found him on CL for a really good price (guy is having his 1st baby and wife doesn't want large snake around). Of course I had to find this ad right after being over at my buddies house where he has a 5 y/o male who is a complete sweet heart.

As far as feeding goes, here's what he says in the email "He is on large mice. I have been feeding him the equivalent size of rat. Rats are a bit more healthier for the snake. I think they are called hopper rats. Hopper being the size. Small rats are too big." So not sure what exactly the snake is feeding on lol.

Ok, sounds like he may have been given more than one mouse at a feeding. That makes sense. Some Carpets can be difficult to switch to rats. I have one yearling that ate one rat pinky, but has refused any more. Back to mice for a bit for her.

I have a male Jungle that is awesome. He loves to be handled. He loves to be out & about.
Rats are easier to feed because you only have to feed one, whereas with mice, you have to feed multiple, when the snake is full grown.

If he's on mice now, I wouldn't worry about getting him switched right away. Get him settled in, then after a couple feedings, try offering an apporpriate sized rat & see if he takes it. I found that thawing mice & rats together has helped some of mine switch.

Here's a few pics of the little guy (he looks pretty small for a 2y/o)

He's very pretty! I like the pattern.
He does look kinda small, but he doesn't look skinny, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. Just keep him on a normal feeding schedule & he'll grow for ya in time. :)

Have you weighed him?

I haven't yet, those are just the pics the guy sent me, have to wait till payday but he's holding him for me

I just need to pick up a good scale, thinking of borrowing a powder scale but not sure if it'll go heavy enough

Looking at options for housing options and was contemplating the 116qt or 110qt sterilite tub since they're both pretty similar in terms of dimensions to a 40breeder. The 116 is 33 1/8"Lx20 1/4"Wx14 3/4"H and the 110 is 34 5/8"Lx18 3/4"Wx12 5/8"H with the 40B being 36"x18"x16"

Aw...he's nice looking JCP. Younger ones can be nippy. If you can get him to eat rats then feed him rats. Other wise you will have a 7-8 foot snake eating a bunch of mice at one time. When I first got my JCP he was on mice. Once I switched him over to rats he ZOOMED in size. It was amazing. "Safari" is now close to 8foot long. He is very very tame with handling. Love him. He also spends time out in the open on his big branches or under his hide. He's a very nice pet snake. I got mine from a pet / reptile store some 9 years ago. The previous owner was a school teacher so when he was younger he was handled a lot.

Hopefully he won't be a pain to switch from mice to rats *crosses fingers* but if he is, I've been trying to read up on some tricks to switch him. Also being hopeful he isn't to nippy, I've already accepted that I'm more than likely gonna get tagged a few times, but oh well, worth it if it tames him out

Yeah, that will work for a while. That's the size I have my juv Carpet in.
I'm transitioning him to a full size cage soon, he's grown pretty fast.
