Just a few simple questions

Its me again, Just about to clean the tanks of both my corns and was wondering if i should still use the reptile aspen shavings or the papertowel method. I ask this because the reptile shavings start to stink after a while and it becomes a pain to always have to throw them out clean tank and refill as well it adds up in money after a while. If papertowel is not very good either any recommendations would be nice. Thanks.

Wow,I'm surprised that noone has replied to you (must be your lack of posts...that seems to happen, I noticed) If you want to use paper towels feel free to do so news paper is fine also.

It's not the lack of posts, it's just the frustration of answering the same question over and over and over and over and over again. If people actually did a little bit of research, or even used the search forum just on this site, a LOT of their questions would be answered.

To the original poster:
Paper towels are fine. All of my '08s are on paper towels right now. Once they get bigger, they get switched onto cypress. It smells and looks better, in my opinion, than aspen. It also stays a bit more humid, so you do have to watch that.

How often are you cleaning out your vivs? Do you have excess moisture built up all the time? I change my bedding every 6-8 weeks, which is longer than some claim, and I have never had an issue with aspen smelling bad. I use paper towels for my '08s but I think it would get quite messy with larger snakes.

I didn't answer because I was trying to imagine how long you'd have to go without changing aspen for it to stink! I spot clean only, unless there is major poopage or a water spill, and my vivs never, ever smell, unless there is a fresh poo sitting right there. I can't imagine using paper towels, but I have very elaborately decorated cages and wouldn't like removing/replacing everything once a week or more.

I recently switched all my snakes over to papertowels. Every type of shavings I found was too dusty for me (I have bad asthma)... But I never found that they smelled. How well ventilated is your tank?

My tanks are ventillated very well they have a wire snake proof top. I spot clean daily and clean my tanks roughly very 8 weeks, that is the whole dissenfect clean and windex the out sides. I thank you for the answeres and have one more question that i cant find and if i do there is always mixed thoughts. Roughly what should the humidy be in my tanks ball park would be good then i can regulate from there.

Hmm... I'm not sure why it would smell... Unless of course your humidity is too high... What do you have it sitting at right now? Also, I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make, but how old is your snake and what size is your tank?
That's a real toughy :S

My thermometer/hydrometer reads from 30-100% humidity...with the apartment heater running this winter it has been reading 00% because the air is so dry in here. So, even with the humidity being sub 30 my corns have been perfectly fine. Some recommend getting humidity up to 30-40% during shedding but a moist hide works just as well. Hope that helps...

Ya one tank my humidy is redaing between 30 and 40 and my other one read between 50 and 70 but seems to affect my corns none. My normal i have had for 11 months and my charcol ive had for around 7 months but not sure how old they were before i got them. lol. My tanks are 20 gallon but after christmas i will be getting to 50 gallon tanks.

The high humidity in the one may be encouraging bacteria growth and causing the bad smell...just a thought

Ya i thought that could be a cause but i could see no bacteria growth. Hmmmmmmmmmm maybe just got a bad bag of aspen shavings. Never know. Any thoughts of what i can do to bring my humidy down.

I've noticed that carefresh bedding also works to lower humidity a little because it is more absorbent than aspen... I use it in my bigger snakes' tubs.

There are a few other things i can try and i am also going to get a thermostat contro in the next few weeks so i can controlle everything a little better.
