On my way to the grocery store this morning, something bright in the grass caught my eye. I was really excited - first snake spotting of the year. A closer look revealed something much more unfortunate.... two dead garter snakes, cut up by a lawn mower in some trailer trash redneck's yard. I can't imagine how sadistic a person must be to just run over an innocent, harmless animal like that. I know it's nothing new; I see this happen at least 4-5 times every year... just raising awareness.

Makes me wanna breed a bunch of garter snakes and run everyone out of town by setting them loose.

Dang, I really like those little guys. Could have been accidental, it's that time of year.
 
I used to live in Illinois, the house we bought there had been empty for a while but the owners kept the yard mowed. After moving in we soon discovered a varied snake population. The best were the milk snakes and most of them were missing parts of thier tails it looked like had been cut off by a mower. Luckily they were healthy otherwise.
It is a shame that people kill them like they do. The best we can try to do is educate and try to sway thier opinions.
 
Playing Devil's advocate here: It's very possible the person didn't see them... There was at least one occasion when my brother, while mowing the lawn, almost ran over a garter snake (never actually did, thank goodness!) because he just didn't see it hiding in the grass. And he'd never run over a snake on purpose--he's too afraid of my wrath... lol!

With that said... It's unfortunate that there are many people who would purposely run over a snake. I wish there were a way to show those people that snakes aren't that bad... But most of them are so stubbornly set in their ways, there's just nothing you can do... :(
 
How can it be run over by a lawn mower on a surface covered with sand? Is that the reason you think it was done on purpose?
 
as for cutting grass and hitting a snake, It happened to me a few times when I lived in Texas and had no idea there was a snake there till after I ran it over. Some times you just cant see them in time.
 
I know some people do intentionally run over them to kill them, but I have experienced firsthand, while mowing, they have darted infront of my mower.
 
I never dismissed the possibility of an accident, but I'm pretty sure this was done on purpose. If it were an accident, the snakes would not be lying there for several days, rotting in the yard. People out here kill snakes out of fear without hesitation... misinformed yokels who think every snake is venomous.

Last summer, this town was so riddled with frogs and toads that it seemed like a reincarnation of the biblical plagues! I think it's the result of an imbalanced ecosystem (lack of snake predators), but that's just my uneducated opinion.

I think I will write an article about this for my college newspaper. Does that seem like a good idea?
 
It certainly won't hurt the situation any. And if it even changes one persons opinion on snakes then you did the world a service for sure.
