Layne Labs shipping prices?

I'm trying to figure out the best place to order mice for my snake and so far I've been hearing that Layne Labs is the best compared to Rodent Pro and Mice Direct.

People from a previous thread have said that Layne Labs is great for people close to California, but not for people on the East Coast.

However the price of shipping to Maryland or California is the same! Shipping is $32.44 to ship to San Jose, California. Shipping to Maryland is $33.66. I was using the "shipping calculator" on their site and ordering 1 bag of 50 pinkies. I've done other comparisons and the shipping only differs by 4 dollars from Cali to Maryland.

Am I missing something? Has anyone ordered from Layne Labs recently? Because it appears that their shipping prices are set (to around 35 dollars), no matter where you are.

If that's the case, then I guess it doesn't matter where you are when you order?

That doesn't sound right at all. As far as I know, charges are calculated on size of box, weight, and destination ZIP code.

I'm in Michigan, and my last order from Layne a few months ago cost around $220 to ship. (That was for approximately 1000 rodents of various sizes.)

Also, I've used those shipping calculators before when buying online from various other companies. When my package arrived, the invoice showed a larger amount. When I called the company, they said that the calculator was for "approximating" only.

I would call Layne, and speak with someone directly for a quote, and/or explanation of how their calculator works.

P.S. If you were in my area, I would give you a bag of pink mice. I over-ordered, and all of my snakes are up to fuzzies now. I suppose I can give 2 or 3 to each snake, but that's a drag!

I agree, the shipping does go up depending on box, weight, and ZIP code. But I was saying that in general if you are ordering the same thing and you compare shipping to Maryland versus California, the calculator gives you around the same price *varying around 5 dollars*.

But I don't always like to trust those calculators either! So I'm going to give them a call and check.

I also only have 1 cornsnake. So I don't want to buy 50 pinkies, because she will outgrow them very soon (I'm thinking 2 months). So I wanted to buy maybe 10 or 25 mice from Layne Lab. But paying an extra 30 dollars for a bag that's only 5 or 10 dollars seems so wasteful :(

I received my order from them a few days ago.

I got 10 sm. fuzzies, 10 lg. fuzzies, 25 hoppers, plus a shipping cost of $39.24 to Missouri. The actual charge was the same as the shipping calculator on their site.

I'm wondering if they have a "minimum" shipping charge, and build it from there, depending on weight and destination.

Say, for instance, an order from their location to 50 miles away has an actual cost of $19, but they charge $30 anyway.

Yeah, I would not want to pay $30 shipping for an order that costs $10 for the actual product.

I guess it's the same in a lot of industries though. I sent flowers for a friend's funeral just last week. The flower arrangement was $35, and the delivery and "handling" fees were $29. Go figure . . .

You're probably safe ordering a combination of pinks, fuzzies, hoppers and weanlings. They go through the fuzzy stage rapidly. Hoppers fairly rapidly, and weanlings take the longest to graduate from.

Hi Nanci,

I was thinking about getting different types of mice but then I would have to freeze them. I've heard that 3-4 months is the max, because after that they start to lose nutrition?

My snake is the same size as she is in my avatar picture. So I was thinking maybe I could get 25 pinkies (6 months) and then 25 fuzzies (6 months)? But then I'd have to freeze them for a year. I don't know how long it would take for Eve to grow out of Large pinkies and move in to fuzzies.

I would also have to traveling with the mice. I live in Maryland, but go to college in New York (and of course Eve comes too). But I guess that concern could be solved by putting the mice in a cooler with an ice pack?

I've heard that if stored properly, they can last up to a year (I think?) I've got some mice in my freezer that have been in there a while and look exactly like the day I got 'em. Of course I individually baggied mine (I'm insane lol) and they are in a tupperware container with locking sides and in my super freezer...they don't keep as well in the fridge freezer (too much opening/closing).

So should I put them in a plastic tupperware container? I would have to store them in my mini fridge in college, which would be opened and closed quite a bit.

To be clear, mice with fur will last up to a yr if kept in a deep freezer. I wouldn't try to keep more than a months worth of frozen mice in a mini fridge freezer compartment. Are there any reptile shows/expos near where you go to school? Maybe you could make a monthy run for mousicles?

For one snake, I would be inclined to buy retail. I sell pinks for .50 cents at my pet shop, that wouldn't be too bad of a feed bill. Or, if you know a breeder or local herp club, see if you can tag onto one of their orders?

That't true. I just wish I could find a pet shop in New York that I can buy from. Because buying them from Petco, I'm paying 1.89 for one pinkie! And they never have the right sizes.

I thought buying online would eliminate that problem, but then I'd just end up paying way more in shipping.

Wow thanks! This looks very helpful. I tried googling it before and maybe I just didn't type in the right things. I'm going to find out if they have the right sizes.

Thanks again!

LL Shipping

Any shipping for FT is horrendous. I've ordered once from LL, since my regular vendor closed up shop a year ago. And the shipping was almost the cost of the entire order. You're paying for the dry ice and the weight.

You'd be much better off connecting with the herp society or a local pet store...more likely a mom 'n pop store b/c of the crazy prices PetsMart and PetCo charge. Ask around..there might be local pet owners that would be willing to share cost and let you piggy back on one of their orders. I do that for ppl fairly often. Maybe check Mice On Ice??? Or...There are a couple of FT sellers in GA and IL that might have better prices for shipping, but with a little dorm? sized fridge and freezer, you'd be better off to buy as you need...until your little guy needs bigger prey. I'd Google frozen mice and see what closer vendors you come up with. (JimiSnakes is a boa and ? breeder there in New York, and maybe he buys closer to home.)

I have a couple packages of pinks (at 50 each) that I don't need anymore, but you're too far away to make it economical for you. :(
