Lids on Sterlite Tubs

So, I'm moving my babies up to a bigger size again. Going to the 16 qt. Sterlite tubs, which is bigger and cheaper than the critter keepers I was considering.
I know that lots of people use these, but my question is about the lids. They came with the blue plastic lids that 'snap' (audibly not visibly) shut at two ends, but I think my snakes are going to be able to get out at the middle of the lids where there is no closure. My 'rack' is higher than the tubs, so it won't help in any way to secure these.

Has anybody ever rigged a closure for these that works well? I was thinking to drill a few holes through the under side of the 'lip' that goes through the lid as well and then using some sort of pin there..

Any ideas?

Ok, I already have a bunch of bungee cords too, which I was thinking of using before- the shelving is like a metal wire/bar deal, so I can use them over the tops as weight..

What I do is stack them in a number (for me 3) that fit tightly in the shelf.
This holds them all down.
You can add wooden planks at the bottom to account for shelf not matching any number exactly.
So far I've never had an escape that wasn't due to me doing something wrong.
Hope that helps,
Gino

I know I've seen pictures on here of people using binder clips. Bungee cords would also work. Personally, I just throw the textbooks that I never open on there. :grin01:

Shoot! I've schlepped every textbook I've ever bought for 25+ years. I can finally get my money's worth out of them!!

I use stick-on velcro. One small square on the lid, another on the body of the tub. Then cut a "strap" to go between them. Use two straps on both sides of a 16qt. tub and it will be very secure.

Greg that sounds like just the thing..
The only thing I was hating about the bungee idea was that they would have to go over several tubs to make it tight, then I'd have to take it off several just to get one out..
I like the velcro idea better.

Of all the ideas here, I actually like your pin idea, but the velcro straps idea is probably the best I've heard. I'll remember that one.

You can buy nice velcro strap things at Home Depot. They're great for rounding up UTH/Thermostat/Thermometer cords, too.

I've used binder clips since using Sterilite tubs. Three clips on each long side for my 41qt tubs and two per side for my 12qt tubs.

I've yet to have an escape.
