live pinkies

Ok... maybe I will not buy like 20... maybe I will just buy like 10 if I can get them cheap...
But I got another question. How do you know if it is still wants to eat after you give it one pinkie.. I heard some corns will just keep eating as long as you know giving them food.. how do you know that 1 or 2 times per week is enuff for your little guy.

Many times at shows you have to buy them in prepackaged quantities (usually 25, 50, or 100). I buy my mice/rats by the thousands and just vacuum seal them. They'll keep for awhile (I usually place an order every 4-5 months).

I would not feed your baby more than once every 5 days. Run a search for the 'Munson Plan', which is a great guideline for feeding corns.

The munson plan is right here

The Munson Plan (Sample Feeding Chart): Revised 06/08/08
-When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 5-6 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 6-7 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (20-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+) See below.

Note: Adult females are fed more frequently than adult males (especially following brumation). Adult females are fed every 7-12 days; adult males are fed every 11-14 days.

Depending on how small my babies are, how quickly they digest and how quickly they are activly looking for food I will sometimes feed every 4 days. For example I just bought 3 snakes, 1 born beginning of July, 2 beginning of Aug and they came to me at 8 gms, 7 gms, and 6 gms. They were very under fed by the breeder and they were so skinny their back bones stuck out. So they are being fed every 4 days until I can get them up to at least 15 gms each.

Some corns will eat until they get sick. So as a "General rule of thumb". One good size meal, Approx 1 1/2 size the diameter of the fattest part of the belly, once a week. This is a good rule however, not the only way of doing it. The munson plan is a good guideline and is a extremely good way to feed your snake. Sometimes people have to adjust it slightly, Not all snakes are built equal. Others have developed good ways of doing it too. There are too many to mention all.

If it is a baby I would try 1 pinkie every 5 days until the baby was large enough for a small fuzzy. Then bump him to a small fuzzy every 7 days. Then when he hits a small mouse keep with every 7 days until he hits an adult mouse, then at this point you can slowly get him to 10-14 days. This is how I usually do it, but by no means is the only way....

Sorry to thread jack but how much do you pay for live pinkies ?

Im paying around $1.60 each Fuzzies are $1.80 and any bigger $2.89

Live pinkies....$5.00 same price as a live pet mouse!! Insanity I know....I have only bought them twice to fatten up a female leopard gecko I rescued.

woah....that is insanity. somehow i'm not supprised, i bet if i were looking for a live pinky at the pets unlimited here it would be the same. :nope:

Holy Molly!!!!!! I sell my pinkies for 50 cents a pop to the locals. And to the local pet shop. She does charge $1.50 for hers though. I suddenly remembered why I raise my own mice.......

Yea so today i bought 4 pinkies frozen that were missing body part and squashed to a total or $6.59

Wow! So you paid over a 1.50 each. Actually besides the missing limbs and the squished part. Thats not to awful bad from a retailer.

A real good way to cut the cost is to find a local herp club, they usually have someone in the club that breeds mice or know a local breeder. They also sometimes order in bulk for the club to save on shipping cost.....

I agree with starting out with F/T. 1, it easier to find when you need them. I'm a mouse breeder and I started out my 2nd corn on live pinkies. I'm sure it was her first meal. The problem is that they grow so quick that I'd have to have a litter every week to feed her every week. She now won't take a F/T pinkie. I did discover that she will gladly eat a live fuzzie, so that relieves the problem. I thought they'd be too big for her but she's a champ.

My 1st, Frank, was raised on F/T for the first 9 months. He still ate the frozen pinkie Ethel refused which was little more than a snack after eating live hoppers for months. Not a picky eater, but a little more timid when it comes to killing hoppers and adults which he is plenty big for now.
