I'm the proud Mom of a neonate Sunglow Motley I bought from SMR. She arrived just yesterday, and I wanted to create an account on this site not only to document her life and growth, but to stay in touch with the community and get help when I need to. I have two other corn snake I adopted from a friend as adults, a handsome boy named Ryu and a shy girl named Servos (I'm not allowed to rename them).

I've mostly been a gecko person until now: I started with Leo's, but that was before the Navy and having to find new homes for my scaled darlings. I now own Katja (my African Fat-Tail), Ryu, Servos and the nameless beauty in my avatar.

Why doesn't she have a name yet?

I'm a firm believer in "discovering" names for things that are important to you. Sometimes this happens spontaneously (like my guitar being named Adelaide the moment I laid eyes on her) or in weird ways (my AFRICAN gecko being named for a RUSSIAN character from Archer just stuck). Ryu and Servos wouldn't be my first choices, but their Mom and I are best friends, and I'd never rename them. The two family cats (who live with my parents) are Marketa Irglova (Marketa; named for the female half of The Swell Season) and Frederic Francois Chopin (Chopin; named for the Romantic-era pianist).

Until her name comes to me like it did the rest of them, this little beauty has none.

Thanks!

Will do! Right now I'm just so excited to be a new Mom (this will be my first baby snake ever, but not my first baby reptile) that I keep wanting to stick her under people's noses and say, "LOOK AT HER! ISN'T SHE PRECIOUS!?"

I spent the first few days before her arrival setting up the tank to JUST the right parameters, and she's got plenty of foliage and hiding spaces to disappear into (but none where I can't get to her if I need). I've got pinkies in the freezer and a timer on my phone set to every 5 days so I don't lose track. So long as she keeps up her end (i.e. Being a snake) she's got a long and comfortable life ahead of her.

She has a name!

Alaula (Allow-oo-la), a.k.a. Lulu

It's Hawaiian for the light of early dawn, literally meaning, "Flaming Road" (long, like a snake). Being a Sunglow I think it suits, and Hawaii's known for its beautiful sunny days: each dot on her back (being a Motley and all) is like its own sun.

Welcome! That is a beautiful name. Good luck with Alaula!

Morning 3

Going into morning 3 I'm tempted to try and feed Alaula; I've never used frozen pinkies before, and I'm anxious to see her succeed. However, I'm aware she may not be fully settled in yet, so I'll try and hold back for another 2 days. But I've already got a game plan: I'm going to put her into the feeder tubs I put my adults in (after scrubbing them out: don't want the scent of them to prevent her from eating). However, they're very large, so I'll also be putting her in her shipping tub, which should still have her scent. Hopefully this will work: I don't ever want her to associate her tank with dinner time.

I've got contingencies in place if she doesn't eat: I've been doing my homework and know a variety of alternatives. If I have to wait longer than 5 days I will; if I have to go as far as busting out some brain matter, I will. But there's a lot of steps between here and there.

Handling Alaula

I've decided to hold off on even touching Alaula unless absolutely until after her first feeding (I'm not counting transferring her from her vivarium to the feed box, since I'll be trying to stress her as little as possible and handling her a minimal amount)... and her first poop. She doesn't need the added stress of being in a new environment, with new smells, with a big new predator picking her up and not letting her hide before she's even had her first meal. It's agonizing waiting, but it'll be better for her in the long run. After that I'll make a habit of handling her the day before she eats for as long as she'll allow.

When Ryu was a baby his Mom says she'd let him curl up in her bra. He got used to her smell and her warmth and grew to look forward to being held (probably why he's always eager to get out when I come home, and loves going down my shirt). I'll try that once she's a little bigger, so she has less to be afraid of.

Hello and welcome from another new snake mom! I know exactly what you mean when you said you wanted to show your new baby to everyone "look how precious!" I feel the same about that and how hard it is to leave them alone.

Im looking forward to watching your new baby's progression here.
