Sean, Mary Ann & the kids
:wavey:Hello All.. Our names are Mary Ann & Sean... Sean retired from his herpers biz years back, way before my time, at which point he had over 250 snakes of various breeds. Everything from Pythons to Kings and oh so much more... And now... here we go again... except this time... I am the VERY EXCITED AND ENTHRALLED partner, and he is excited to stick to cornsnakes.

We have a 4 yr old snow that was a gift from Sean's son, bought at a pet store back in 2004. And as I searched to find a mate for our "Whytsnake", somehow we have now bought a total of 5 new corns... 3 adults and two
'08's. Sooo... I thought I would introduce our family so far pictorially...:)

First: Our Whytsnake...
Whtesnake_N_Dinner_07.jpg

Our 2 new babies soon... And our Two breeding females and male soon after that...!! WoooHooo I am sooo excited!
Thankx for letting melurk and find breeding sellers here!! :dancer:

Hello Mary Ann, Sean; welcome.
I would ask what the '08's and the trio are, but I like surprises.
Did Sean have hots?

:wavey:Hello, welcome to the forum, hope you like it here. That is a very pretty Snow you have. I also have a male Snow and he is one of my Favorites(ok they are all my favorites, lol).

:-offtopicI'm going to warn you though, the majority of people on this thread, myself included do not like live feeding usless the animal refuses F/t. I just thought I'd give you a heads up because I'm sure others will comment about your picture.

The only hots Sean had was rattlers... western diamond backs to be specific.. And Howdy Alan and thankx for the welcome... I can tell you that our 08's are a female carmel and a male black albino... And tomorrow we are paying for a couple of Cheryl's beauties! A proven mated apir and an extra female stiper for our beloved Whytsnake!

:dancer:

Hello and welcome! I can't wait to see more pictures... Very nice ghost you have there. And that mouse looks so darn scarry! As Iguanagirl said, the majority of people here are against feeding live so be aware/prepared.

Thank You Katie... for the welcome & the heads up. And just to explain... For the 1st 3 yrs of Whytsnakes life, he only ate mice we killed for him, but as we are "nature lovers" we try to make life as normal as possible for him. So once he "hunted" his first meal, to be honest we were kinda proud of him. We realize that with his color he would NEVER survive in the wild... But we prefer to make life as interesting and normal as can be, considering his captivity and all... We BOTH truly don't intend to offend anyone and truly hope we don't... And if this pic bothers anyone, I will take it off...

Thank You Again for the warm welcome... And please know how extatic I am to be engaging in this "cornsnake" adventure!!! You are a group I have such admiration for!

Mary Ann

A little "yikes" here. I obviously didn't look close enough at the rodent. I thought it was fake and the reflection was from a fake eye. Now I see there is eyeshine from both eyes.
I fed my snake live for a while after I got her(she was a "used" snake), but when the mice got bigger I started worrying about it. She got a bite once, not bad. The bite was on her side and only drew a bead of blood when she relaxed, but the the thought of where she could have been damaged worried me.
About three months later I started killing the mice for her, it's much safer and less stress when feeding. She ate with no problem.
It does suck to have to kill them Stuart Littles though, they're cute.

The main problem with feeding live is that that mouse could kill your snake. My sister-in-law worked once at a pet store that specialised in reptiles and one of the smaller ball pythons would only eat live. In front her eyes that mouse took off the top part of the snake's head, mortally wounding it. So please just keep that in mind? Maybe you can stun the mice first so they aren't as much of a danger?

Yeah they are so cute when they are wearing t-shirts and pants. :)

....and drivin' dat dare little car and stuff! hehehe!!

I totally get the "worried" part about the "getting hurt" part. Ya'all gotta remember, I am new at all this. And back nearly 3 yrs now I guess it was, Sean decided to give this especially tiny mouse to Whytsnake live... Curious if he could kill it himself as he had been getting increasingly "rougher" at the attack when we held the dead mouse hanging for him. And sure enough! He did. Although..........
about 8 or 10 feedings later, you got it! Dang mouse BIT my baby! There was a bit of blood, but the mouse was dead before I could even say.."Sean! He got bit!" :(
To which Sean, smiled at me, looked at our boy...and told me in his kindest voice... "Honey, it's a snake... It happens... usually no more than once, and after that, the snake is more careful about how they grab their food."
Didn't matter to me though... On the next couple of feedings I was Right on top of it... I wouldn't even blink! Well, Sean I know was laughing under his breath at me... but he soon eased my worrying by switching from "mice" to small young rats. Even the three pet stores and one site I checked with on line all agreed... MICE can be mean! Very VERY rarely is a rat mean... They tend to FLIGHT.. not FIGHT! This eased my mind....
And though I will say in this last over 2 yrs, Whytsnake has been the ONLY one getting his "BITE ON" around here... I still watch over him, from a few feet away of course... BUT STILL... I NEVER leave him alone with his meals....

AND THANK YOU GUYS WAY, WAY, BIG TIME BUNCHES !!! YOU ALL ARE PRO'S AND NOW I FEEL MUCH BETTER KNOWING I WASN'T BEING WEIRD TO WORRY!! MMUUAAHH!!! I NEEDED THAT!! LOL

Well as soon as I can figure out how to make these new pics I took of our 08 babies... "Smokey (carmel female) & Da' Bandit" (black albino male) SMALLER.. LOL I will post them too! :uhoh:

Thank You again for making me feel welcome!

Smokey Gal was out of her "travel cup" with in seconds! Checkin in on Da' Bandit... Who did not venture out of his cup for about an hour... Since that wonderful day... "She" is a daredevil... Climbing to the top of her new home and falling back down! She seems to ALWAYS be on the go! Where as my lil' Man Da' BAndit.... (sigh) Has only come out of his box once a day for water and then RIGHT back to the box... For 5 days now.... Poor baby...hopefully he will relax and get curious soon... And hopefully...LOL The lil' girl won't been herself to bad! LOL we added extra padding and gave her some soft limbs to climb hoping it would keep her from falling so much! LOL

..........today we pay for our new 'adult proven breeding pair" along with the adult female for my Whytsnake! Wooooo Hoooo!!! I AM SO JAZZED!!:dancer::dancer::dancer::dancer:

hum, yes I've seen a few live-fed snakes come through rescues that were pretty banged up. One had his nose bit so bad he breaths through his mouth when he isn't resting. It's never a problem until it's a problem, you know?

I use salad tongs and a dead mouse for my guys, it actually gives them more of a work out because they have to catch the Magical Fying Zombie mouse! Bwahahaha. And they sure do kill it dead when they get a hold of it, lol. Fun for both of us really. Plopping a live in their tank isn't really natural, neither can run or hide so it's more like a cage match....and does this mean you let your dogs (assuming you have some) kill live raccoons for their dinner because it's more natural and interesting for them?
That's my argument, anyway.

Anyway, I'm glad you're here. I'll let the other explain co-habbing to you, most people here are against it as well as live feeding.

HAHAHAHA!!! I Love The Salad Tong idea!!! I think that would be perfect! And as far as my dog kill raccoons for her dinner...LMAO!!! She is about half the size of an adult 'coon! Although... in her youth she used to think Cats were on her menu!! LOL She is 14 now, and blind in one eye and deaf in both ears! But other than that...Healthy as a 10 lb horse! LMAO!!

This is her way of telling us she is ready to go home!

And JUST to ease EVERYONES mind on the "live feeding" subject... Sean says as long as we are ordering frozen pinkys for the new babies... And we will have 3 more adults in a week to ad to our one Snow adult... We are switching to Frozen mice too! WOOHOO!!! Trust me... I AM MUCH HAPPIER not having to worry about ANY of my babies getting bit, or worse!!!!! SO NO WORRIES PEEPS!! (But hey, ya gotta admit... That IS a cool picture... Pink Eyes staring down Pink eyes?!?!)

Thankx for the warm welcome all of ya'all... And I will be watching for the advice on the "Co-Habitating" subject... Hopefully, SOMEONE will feel like informing me on the subject...

Well .... Alllllrighty then! I would say that about tells it! So is it common in corns? Same age and size Babies? That are WELL fed even?

Sean already told me that you never feed them in the same place, he has witnessed his pythons and boa's in what seemed to be like a feeding frenzy... One grabbed the food and had it half down when the other began eating from the other side of the bunny and wound up eating more than the bunny... And sometimes I guess they get into the "EAT IT" mode, and when there is something else warm and moving close by... CHOMP!

But he hasn't mentioned they could just eat eachother, PERIOD... just cuz! Well other than kingsnakes, Sean tells me they eat other snakes in the wild, so in them it is built in I guess. I would REALLY like to know how often this happens with corns...

And thank you very much for the info and the heads up!

Even if they don't eat each other, cohabbing can really stress them.

I cohabbed my first two snakes. For the first months they were both eating well, but my little snow, Ferenea, was just not growing at the same rate until Liam was nearly twice her size at least in girth. At that point, Feren went on a hunger strike that lasted 6 weeks, and a period of pickyness for several months that ended up with me having an 11gram yearling snow and a 60+ gram yearling anery/ghost/thingy. Even now she's 30grams while Liam is over 100.
