Monitor Rescue

Jay@PJCReptiles

"Quality Before Quantity"
Hi Everyone,
We were fortunate enough to be able to have a Black Throat Monitor "Zeus" in our care for a couple of weeks. A friend of ours knew someone who had this guy and was just going to give it to anyone. Monitors are illegal in Maine so before some ignorant moron who wanted it for a status symbol came along to take it or worse yet a Warden of the Maine Fish and Wildlife confiscated it and destroyed it we thought it would be best to rescue him before something bad happened to him. We had just the place for him, N.E.R.D. (New England Reptile Distributors). They breed different species of monitors and we knew they would have the facility for him. "Zeus" is a great guy and very impressive in person. He is 4 feet and well over 10 pounds eating rats, ground turkey and boiled eggs (shell and all). I wish we could have kept this guy as I was really getting attached to him but we knew it would be for the best to take him where he can get the care an animal like this demands. We made an appointment to take him to N.E.R.D. and see Bev. Bev is from England and she is in charge of all the monitors there. When we got there she came right down to see him and didn't hesitate to take him in. "Zeus" is now one of her personal "babies" (that's what she calls them). I have a couple of pictures of some of the animals she breeds and takes care of but I will post those on another thread in our personal forum. Back to the story, I really didn't want to get rid of him right up until the time she took him away but because they felt that we did the right thing by bringing him there and by how passionate I was about him they offered us a killer deal on something we can have in Maine, a 0.1 "Mocha" phase Argentine Boa. The deal was so good we would have been stupid to pass her up. A lot of the bigger Boa breeders tend to consider Argentines as fodder and bottom rung Boas but we think she is gorgeous. She is 6' of wonderful chocolate goodness. As soon as PJ saw her she fell in love. This girl is super docile and loves to be handled. I felt a little apprehensive about getting a deal on her just for what I thought was doing the right thing. I told them that I didn't do what I did in hopes of getting something in return but that I was just looking out for the well being of "Zeus". They insisted that the price was set because we did do the right thing by "Zeus". That made me feel pretty good so we bought her. Now "Zeus" is happy and safe where he belongs and PJ and I are happy with another Boa in our collection. Here are some pictures of them. Thanks for looking and we hope you like.

It's people like you who give the herp community a great rep. You did what was best for Zeus. I know you didn't want anything in return, but lucked out in that NERD also has the same mind frame as you and was willing to give you something in return KUDO'S to you for getting Zeus a great home and congrats on your new baby!

How did you guys know Argentine boas were one of my favs!!! Absolutly beautiful. I needs to get one of them!

Hows your other big boids doing?!

I think probably Indigo needed a home (because more and more animals are always arriving) and they recognized a perfect opportunity to get her into an excellent home with knowledgeable people, so they gave you a "deal-" which was really a deal for them!

Zeus is adorable. Those guys just never look happy to me- they are either clawing in a corner or laying there resigned. I don't know how anyone can make an enclosure big enough to keep one happy. What a beautiful animal. I hope he likes it at his new home.

Thank you for rescuging him!

Good looking animals.

My husband and I rescued a green iguana last Friday. She was one of those "free to good homes" cards they stick up at Petsmart. We weren't going to get her because she was much bigger than we thought we could handle (NOT knowing anything about iguanas) but seeing the small cage and less than health living conditions and the fact her tail was broken off that day by "some kids playing with her" we decided to take her. We plan on taking the room we keep the birds, building an enclosure (5' x 12', ceiling high) just for her. :-offtopic

Kudos to you for doing a great thing for another living creature.

Good luck with the iguana. It is not a beginner lizard. That makes me sick that some adult allowed kids to play with her, resulting in the broken off tail. Poor baby. It's probably a good thing you're starting with a bigger one, not one of the frail little babies you see everywhere, with half of them half dead. And never let her eat dry cat food!

We took her to the vet last night. Vet said she's a little underweight but okay. No mouth rot but the tail needed scrubbing because there was sand in the wound. Naturally that was my chore. Once I got the hang of handling her everything was okay but right now my arms are all scratched where she got loose from under the towel when we took her to the vet.

She's soaking in the tub and I plan on taking her out in the sun. I learned the trick was to rub her nose and she closes her eyes and goes to sleep. I don't know if they all do that but Lizzy does.

You see, the way she is I can't see children playing with her. I think she tailwhipped the owner (adult) and he yanked on her tail breaking it. She is not docile, she is not calm unless her nose is being stroked - so how could children play with her if she almost rips my arms off just holding her.

Getting an iguana was not a desire and I thought she was much smaller but I could not let her stay there. So I am now frantically reading up on iguanas. As soon as I learn how to scan and post photos on the site I post all my reptile children.
