mouth problem

My 6 year old snake has refused food for 2 weeks. Prior to that she immediately struck and ate F/T adult mice weekly. Never regurged. There is a white mucous in her mouth. I am assuming that it is an infection. What could cause that? What can I do prior to getting her to the vet?

RI = Respiratory infection.
Cures include injections of baytril (as was the case with my rat snake) or amikacin (spell check on that one) that was for my boa. Simple home remedies aren't usually effective, but can help with the healing process. Most recommendations are to raise the temperature, but lower the humidity. This helps to dry out the infection. Just make sure your snake has plenty of water during this period to help remain hydrated.

Her viv is at 80 on one end.She stays near her water dish but not drinking. She is dehydrated and the vet can't see her until Tuesday. I am afraid she will go into renal failure if she does not drink.

I gave Mazie her 2nd injection of Baytril today and her 2nd oral metronidazole. She still looks weak. The vet stated that if she has an RI it is not in her lungs yet, the crackle sounds are near her mouth and her lungs sound clear. She stated that the tx will work for an RI or stomatitis. She did drink water today (the first time I have seen her drink since she got sick). Her mouth is still has mucous. I raised her viv temp and have soaked her daily.
Hope this works. She is a nice normal, very gentle after her first nips a few months ago. She was so healthy and such a good eater.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'm not a vet, but don't they usually need ten days? If it's now a RI, then she probably needs a more specific drug.

Are 3 injections of Baytril (6 days of treatment) enough? She is holding her head up in the air. RI? Or a function of mucous?

When my ratsnake had his RI, we had 10 straight days of Baytril (once a day). Your vet might be wanting you come back after that 3rd injection to do a checkup to see how the medication is working, and might give you more then.

My cornsnake is getting worse. She is gaping her mouth. She has completed 3injections of Baytril and no progress. Where do I get a nebulizer? I am calling the vet tomorrow to discuss F10 and Baytril in a nebulizer. She did not offer it as tx so I will need to explain the process, what do I tell her? Help.

Thanks. I am worried. She said we should see progress by today. Nope, its worse. I am soaking her in 80 degree water and she is drinking some and then rubs her slime of her mouth. The only time I see her want to drink is in the soak bath and she sticks her entire head under water to drink, wipes her slime off the sides of her mouth on the bottom of the bowl, then she lifts her head high in the air.

I need a RX to buy a nebulizer and compressor. I hope a medical supply store will accept an RX from a vet. I will call them. My mom had a nebulizer...my sister in Hawaii now has it. Thats not helpful.

Vet gave me a nebulizer and a solution of Baytril and something other than F10 (she did not know what that was). I bought a plastic large shoebox, drilled a hole in the side, inserted the nebulizer hose and she had a 15 min tx (I left her in the box for 15 more minutes so she would inhale all the medicine. Vet says 2x per day 15 min each tx x 1 week. I raised her viv temps to 80 (cool side)/ (89) hot side. Water dish on cool side. I am sucking the mucous out of her mouth with a small syringe as she freaks out when I try to swab it out with chlorhexidine solution. She is drinking some.

I do not think the habitat was the problem. She has newsprint on the bottom, covered with dried bermuda grass, a climbing log, and a big silk plant and a fake rock cave for hides. She must have chilled too much while she was in the wall of the house for a couple of hours (BUT I live in Florida-its 80-90 outside???).

Wish her luck.

we're all wishing you the best, tell her she has a whole website of ppl rooting for her good recovery.
