Musk question?

Was checking out a kingsnake at Petco (just looking) and he let out a yellowish whitish liquid about looked like hand lotion. Would this be musk? It didn't seem to have much odor (didn't actually put up to nose). Just curious.

Probably. I have had several king and milk snakes musk me, and they all have their own individual odor. My MBK musks regularly, but I have never smelled it. For some reason...it just doesn't stink...or at least it doesn't bother me if it does...

However, we have a female MBK at the shop, and when SHE musks...LOOKOUT!! It's an odor bomb that drenches the whole room.

I think it depends on the individual snake as to what the odor of their musk will be.

I believe the musk is the clear, yellowish fluid they let loose with and the rest is urates and or poo... Typically, when any of our kings or milk musks, we get the whole kit and caboodle, where as when the corns do, it's just the clear musk.

To me it all stinks, but some stink worse then others and the amount of musk seems to effect how strong the smell is at the time. I try to avoid bringing my hand up to my face to get a good whiff, so I never notice a difference from snake to snake.

I can, with confidence, say that musk is one of the worst things to ever taste. You really don't want to try it - so always keep mouth shut when holding a musk-flinging snake of any species.

Yes... I think we should... I know so few people openly admit to being part of the taste-testing club - but there are a few of us out there.

I'll tell you what... that was the first time I've washed my mouth out with soap willingly without my mother threatening me for saying a dirty word.

That is a, uh... distinguished experience.

I've gotten the musk/poo/urine experience from Katerina before. Never in the face. Quite the winning combination.

It usually happens when you aren't paying attention - like when you are holding a extra-active snake and talking at the same time. For me, I was holding another breeder's adult male and the snake took exception to the fact that I was not focusing solely on him...

I know... not what you wanted to hear... I'm so sorry to disappoint your sordid mind. Oh, and I live in California.. not Arkansas - though my grandmother is originally from Arkansas :sidestep:

I have never gotten to taste musk even though I have the champion musker, Loco Taco the milk snake formerly known as Inez.

The worst think I have ever had in my mouth is Love Bugs!! Riding a bike, I accidentally sucked a couple down and actually puked!! On my bike! In the middle of a 125 mile ride...
