My babies were almost toast!!!

Flow

Seeing RED again...
I recently hatched out some babies and have been waiting to post pics as soon as they shed. Coming home from work and was about to take one of my sons fishing. Waiting for my wife to come home and stay with the other two so we can leave. Well my wife didnt come home right away so I had some extra time to look at the new babies. As i pull one of the tubs out of the baby rack I felt the back end burning up!! I looked at the thermometer and its reading 135!! The thermostat stuck on me and had i gone fishing it would of been a bad outcome for the little guys. I will not use heat tape again. Now got to figure out what im going to do for heat in the future because im getting rid of all heat tape.

Can you do ambient heat in that room? I have ambient heat for mine, and have for 4-ish years. I have a t-start on my radient oil heater, with a ceiling fan directly above it, to circulate the heat. I have a backup t-stat plugged into my main t-stat.

I do have the new THG heat tape, that is supposed to be better, but I have not used it myself.

Thats what I was thinking. I have 2 of those portable heaters. Im sure i would only need one but no ceiling fan.....but many many fans. Lol. What do you have it set on and night time temps?

My t-stats are set 80-83. The temps fluctuate a bit naturally, with external temps.

An oscilating fan will help circulate it a bit, but if you plan on doing it long term, put a ceiling fan in, and put the heater directly below it. That will push the heat down and out, and while there will still be some variation, it will be more consistent.

We might have to switch rooms around here then. Two out of the three have ceiling fans. Do you turn the heater down at night?

No, I do not turn the heater down, but the temps do drop a few degrees at night, and with the t-stat, it allows that.

The THG tape works great on a Herpstat 4. Sounds like you might need to invest in a thermostat with a safety relay switch. Keep in mind working for a few hours in a room that is heated to 83 degrees is quite uncomfortable

Mine isn't usually that warm, that's the max temp mine is set at.
If it's not feeding day and I'm going to be in the snake room for a while, I shut the heat off.

I have 3" THG tape and connectors, if interested.

I have a Johnson Control t-stat, but when it comes time to replace it, I will be going with the Herpstat.

Is it the heat tape's fault, or did you thermostat fail (what brand?) or did your probe become dislodged?

Either way, a thermostat that shuts down in case of a failure is helpful, though not if the probe becomes dislodged.

I have a thread here called Remote temperature Monitoring which explains how to set up a system which will warn you (but not shut down) if the temps exceed your range.

It was a zilla thermostat. I have been thinking and still don't know what I'm going to do. I have the portable heater with fans right now and room is 80-82 degrees. I was using flex watt tape will look into those thermostat. What do you recommend Nanci?

Flow, I would be MUCH more prone to blame the cheap thermostat over your heat tape. Lots of us have used various heat tape for many years on many snakes. And yes, I've had a failure or three, but compared to heating a room or using lights, will go with heat tape every time. I've simply started using more expensive thermostats since joining this forum, and have had much, much better luck. They still occasionally fail, but (so far) in the off position.

I use Herpstat and Vivarium Electronics, mostly. I have several old Johnson and Ranco's that run fine too. As for how many racks per thermostat, that all depends on how many probes. I have a Herpstat that runs 4, a VE that runs 2, and all the rest run one.

I use Herpstats, the original model, the ND, and the newer ND (none of the current generation) and they have run fine since 2006. The owner is great for product support, too. The newest models have even more safety features built in.

The biggest danger short of something malfunctioning is the thermostat probe becoming dislodged. Then, when it is no longer on the heat source, the stat will continue to heat to the max. (A good reason for always-visible probed thermometers and remote monitoring.)

Thanks once again. I will look into these and figure out which to go with.
