My first pippies! (crested geckos)

The second egg had hatched when I got up this morning. And I did get another harly like I was wanting! The second one is named Cache and the first is Camas.
So here is Cache!

YAY! Oh it's beautiful. I have to see these things grown up...if they maintain any of their baby cuteness...well, I just sayin'!
 
Anywhere from 7 to 10 inches, including tail, which cresteds can lose and they don't grow back like the other Rhac species will. However breeders and keepers use weight almost exclusively when discussing size. Most get to around 40 grams with some of the biggest I've heard of weighing 60 plus grams. General good minimum breeding weight for a female is 35 grams for one with a tail.
 
Here is the breeder's picture of Cairo, she is a frog butt or tailless. I didn't like the way the frog butts looked to start with, but it grows on you. She is a sweetheart.

Then here is a picture I took just after she got home from UPS. She is partly fired in it but gets quite a bit redder.

I seriously need to stay away from the crestie threads! I want one soooo bad. I think they are the cutest lil buggers and after holding them at the expo I will have one! Your babies must give me the "itch" to add one NOW. LOL
 
Hey...wait a minute! Taviaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...what are going to do with all those babies? Are they keepers?

LOL! Yes, forums can be deadly dangerous places to hang around, you can pick up all kinds of new addictions on them! They are directly responsible for my own crestie addiction. :nope:

A few of them will be keepers and I will try and sell the rest. I'm going to keep these guys until they are around 10 to 15 grams, that's when most of them can be sexed. I'll need to know that to decide which to keep. Males can't be housed with other males once they start to mature. Females can usually be housed together, though there are sometimes bully females that have to be housed alone. This was something of an experiment, I wanted the experience of hatching babies at least once and I want to see if there is any demand for them locally, the pet store moves them fairly fast but that may or may not be a good indicator. There aren't any private breeders near me. So letting the breeder I got Cairo from keep the first clutch was great, that was one less for me to have if there isn't a demand for them here and I knew she was already laying fertile eggs. I probably won't breed my other two until I see what it's like to move these.
 
Tavia, do you feed you CGs the Repashy diet? If so, do you supplement it with anything? I've read that they can do well on just that diet but I'm not totally sure if that's true. If it's true, I think a crestie is in my future someday. :D I don't want to deal with raising crickets, though. I'm not fond of them.
 
Yes, these guys all get the Repashy CGD and only that. While there are still some keepers out there with other opinions, it is fairly commonly considered to have everything a crested needs in it and to be safe to feed that alone. That was a major selling point for me because I've had other herps that needed crickets and I absolutely hate crickets! The biggest "myth" out there on crested care is baby food. I say "myth" because when they first started keeping these guys, it was a major ingredient in what they were being fed. But it is very incomplete and it can be very difficult to get the right proportion of additives in it to give the crested what it needs. Some people will also advise other people that baby food alone is all they need. The Repashy was made to give an easy, cheap, idiot proof option for feeding them, because the number one health issue they have is MBD, Metabolic Bone Disease, from improper diet. Almost all of the big breeders swear by it. But it does make researching them hard, because a lot of the articles and the books out there are fairly old and they say to use baby food.
 
You are awesome! Thank you so much. I have to admit that cresties hold great appeal for me, not only because of their cuteness factor but because of the Repashy diet. I've fed a lot of crickets to a lot of animals and I just don't wanna do it again. :D

Can I ask you one last question? (This is the last one; I swear. ;) ) Are you able to hold your cresties at all or are they too fragile? I know some animals (I'm thinking of chameleons) are too stressed out by it. I would love to have a gecko I could hold sometimes.
 
Ask away! They can be held, they are pretty individual in their temparments, some will love to be held, some tolerate it well and a few others hate it. Cairo is very good with being held, my other female Maui is calm and good with being held. The last time I handled the male, Miami, he was also calm. My two that I got young did go through a phase when they were about 12 to 15 grams where they got very spastic and didn't like to be held, the male might just be coming out of it. I'm told that is normal and most of them calm back down. You'll want to be careful they don't jump from high up onto a hard surface but they are sturdier than they look.
 
^ I agree. It seems babies are pretty fragile and don't like to be held, but after they reach a certain point, most get over it. My garg is around 4 months of age and usually just chills out on me or my laptop, but she can not climb anything, really. Think she's a little fat from all those crickets she used to get. :laugh:

Jumping is pretty "holycrap!" at first, but then you learn how they stand/crouch/look right before jumping and can stop it. xD

They don't need supplemental heating, don't need a lot of space (but it's fun to give it to them), and eat stuff out of a bottle.

No reason not to get one or a garg. :p

They do, but apparently grow faster when given insects.
If you don't like crickets, try dubia roaches! Freaky little things, but they don't smell or make a lot of noise like crickets (though mine CHITTER now and then).
 
Thanks, guys. I'm glad to hear some can be held. I'm not a display animal person. :D I'd never heard of gargs before coming to this site, either. I'm learning so much!

Tavia, I'll definitely have to check out that forum when I get to the research phase of my new addiction...er, I mean habit...er...;)
 
I'm with you, the no cricket thing is a big bonus to be. My daughter as a leo and goes through crickets like water.

I held a garg at the expo and omg he was so calm, even with everything going on around him he was so laid back. He was also $300 so he wasn't coming home with me :(
 
I have a silly question......I have seen everyone talking about their cresties being fired? What does that mean? See I told you it was a silly question.
 
That's not a silly question, it's a little like the numbers question, every new person has to ask it. And like the numbers question, it is very useful to know when you are looking at for sale ads. Cresties, and I'm pretty sure all of the other Rhacs, are able to change their colors to a degree. They do it for a lot of different reasons but when they are at their brightest, most intense state, that is called "fired up." They can be at any stage in between too. My female Maui is really cool with it. It you get her out to hold while she is fired down, which is the dullest they get, usually when she's been asleep, as she walks along your hands, she will fire up starting at the back half of her body and going forward in waves, it looks kind of like she is shaking out her legs and waking up. She really likes to play with her colors, she will go through almost all of her stages two or three times while you are holding her.
When labeling the morph of a Rhac, the fired up color is their "official" color but some of them can look like two different geckos at the extremes. It's generally good to see if someone selling a gecko can get pics of it at both extremes, so you really have a good idea what it's going to look like.
