My little WC gecko

desertanimal

2003 UB313
I really should have taken photos of this little girl when I caught her in June (she's legal, if you care--I have a hunting license just for thsi), but I had no idea she'd blossom so in captivity. She transitioned over to roaches really nicely, which is good for me because I won't raise crickets and don't want to buy them all the time. I have never before kept an insectivore, but have found that I rather enjoy it, and I have an entire small B. dubia colony just for her. Actually I enjoy the roaches themselves, but anyhoo . . . . I haven't yet worked on taming her down for handling--I'm just happy to have her eating what I want her to eat! She has really fattened up and colored up since I caught her. She had no fat reserves in her tail when I caught her, and she wasn't nearly as yellow as she is now. I love that she is really a BANDED banded gecko. Don't get me wrong--I like the spotty ones, too (I think they're all adorable), but I think she's especially beautiful. Now that she's eating reliably out of a small petri dish, I believe I'll start thinking about setting up a more naturalistic enclosure for her. Ok. That's it for the gushing. Here's my beauty.

Very pretty! It's pretty cool that you were able to get her to switch over to roaches. I hate the smell of crickets and their too expensive to buy all the time.
I look forward to seeing more pics of her.

Wow- nice catch. She is lovely. Your light box is working well... you have captured some great pics of her.

Haha! Thanks. I didn't exactly do these in the lightbox, but same idea. I draped pieces of paper across her tub so that the pieces of paper made like a hemispherical tube in her tub, because I knew she couldn't climb out that way. Then I just set lights on either side of her tub on the table. I didn't want to just put her tub in the lightbox because you can see she's in a tub when she's in a tub, and I couldn't risk taking her out and trying to put her in the lightbox outside of her tub. We have a cat who used to be an indoor/outdoor cat, who was an expert Mediterranean gecko-catcher in his youth. He knows the difference between the gecko and the snakes. With the snakes, he's very interested and I have to be careful if he's around. But if he sees that I'm messing with the gecko tub, even without seeing the gecko, he comes over with an intensity that he just doesn't have with the snakes. So I'm extra careful with her.

What you did worked well!

A cat that is an expert Mediterranean Gecko catcher... sounds like with a little training he could help you catch more of these lovely Gexs. I bet he wouldn't need a license.

Very pretty. The wee spots make her look pixelated. I think I would have named her pixel. She is adorable!

I haven't named her yet, Tara! Pixel is a cute name. I'll see if that sticks or not.

That's what I love about geckos, Irish Eyes, their eyes! Some of them have really weird-looking bodies to go along with those awesome eyes, but not this girl--she's beautiful all the way around!

This is a species I have been wanting for awhile. I really do adore the Western Banded Geckos. They are a very pretty species. You have a great looking Gal, ever gonna get her a boyfriend?

She is beautiful....I have a SHTCTB gecko named Monkey and you're right, their eyes are amazing!

I also have a dubia colony for my bearded dragon and my leo...LOVE LOVE LOVE dubia!!

I bought crickets for a treat for them not too long ago and neither lizard would touch them, I ended up throwing them all out.

I'm working on finding her the right guy. He has to be big and handsome, and I want him to have his original tail (or at least a re-grown one that's not ugly). That last part seems to be rare with the males.

She is a beauty! What a great catch, and wonderful she has adapted so well to life with you!

Ooh she's a little beauty! I'm so glad she's doing so well for you and I hope you'll post more updates in the future :)

Awww, she's beautiful! Tell her not to wear TOO much eyeshadow though! **snicker, snicker** How cool on the eggs too!
