Nela my Huge New Horse

New Avatar!
So I decided to take the plunge and buy a mare that I have been eye-ing for a year or so now. She was at my old stables and I was always envious of whoever was riding her. She went up for sale this spring and I have been trying her out. I had a day off today and my friend Sarah came out to the barn and took pictures for me!

Name: Nela
Age: 8
Breed: Percheron/Belgian draft cross
Weight: about 1900 lbs
Temperament: Just about as laid-back and calm as can be! :)

What a change! She's pretty. Will she have to have custom-made shoes? What are your plans for her?

Yeah, she is a change from most of the horses I have ridden. She will be going barefoot. She has tough feet! I have an excellent barefoot trimmer here.

My plans include lots of enjoyable mountain trail riding, some lower-level dressage and some bareback riding. Nothing extreme. She jumps pretty well though LOL. I just want to have fun and enjoy having a horse, while improving my riding.

congrats! theyre great horses, and always so beautiful
Are you going to do any competeing with her or is she just for fun?

Gorgeous mare, congratulations.
I always admire those who ride big, thick horses. I'm quite a small person, and I've always ridden horses that I suppose match my build: morgans, arabs, thoroughbreds, etc.

I just love big horses because
1. their stride isn't tiny; I have more time to adjust myself to their motions
2. I feel like I am riding a bulldozer and that I could ride through anything!
3. There is so much horse to hug! :)

Thank you for the congrats! I am really enjoying her so far.

Congrats on the new purchase! As many others have already stated, I just love the draft horse breeds. I'm sure you will have many years of enjoyment out of her.
Again congrats!

She'd be awesome to drive. Have you ever trained a horse to drive? It's fun, and not so hard!

She's beautiful not only nicely put together but looks very sweet and calm, gotta love those drafts. I used to ride at a very uptight hunter barn (thank god im gone now) and everyone had the typical $100,000+ warmbloods, usually imported. You know what I rode? A tb x shire (looked almost full shire and had the gaits) and he was the most fun to ride! He had the smoothest canter, never spooked, if you pointed him at a jump and were brave towards it, he'd jump it for you! He was only 5 and we could jump around a 4' course with no problems, he was perfect, and everyone on their expensive overbred warmbloods would be having troubles and they'd be spooking at the flowers and at the wind and bucking, ect. good ol' drafts.
