I kind of mixed up my words and phrases there..I am aware that dogs raised as guard and protection dogs with good training will never bite without proper cause or command to do so..Some people though do try and train their dogs thinking they want a good gaurd dog so when it bites without just reason or command they compliment and praise it..I've seen this happen and it was upsetting to me..It wasn't the proper method of training..To the dog all he got out of it was they thought that biting people leads to praise and treats..But I do know there are correct and better ways to train a dog for protection..Police K9 units for example have a lot of my respect for what they do..being trained to take down someone despite dangers that a human would usually fear..Also being trained to gaurd their officeer and at times even the officer's family but to be kind to them and gentle..I know there is a balance when it comes to training dogs..All trainers need to know what they want from their dog and what is the proper way to go about it so the dog gets the idea..I just get upset when I go to someone's house and they tell me.."oh be careful of the dog, he bites.."...Just to me..that is not a balanced dog..:shrugs:
 
I'll have to get some pics of the rescue dobie bitch my friend with the andalusian horses has just got as a yard dog. She's an 8 month old that was being cooped up in a flat, so she's full of the joy of life being around the stables now. She's already learnt how much respect to give the horses, and has a good protective instinct. When I met her she hackled up and stood aloof until she was told I was a friend, then was an explosive licking machine. I love the silly wriggly whole back end Dobies do when they're happy:)

I agree Mazie. Unfortunately things like that happen. People like that shouldn't even own a dog. Most dogs don't have the required temperament for Schutzhund (bite training). I originally got my Great Dane mix for this purpose. I was told initially he was mixed with lab however as it turns out his is mixed with greyhound. My dog is extremely intelligent however he has the greyhound independence, attention span, and desire to run. So he was not trained for personal protection. The up side is that his size keeps most people away that don't know him. I also bought him a spiked collar to help add to the illusion of a formidable dog. In reality he is a very sweet tempered dog whose only threat to you would be to knock you over or beat you to death with his wagging tail. lol Eventually I do plan on getting a pure Great Dane with a temperament for personal protection (the laws in my county prohibit owning pure breeds of the more common protection dogs in apartments and specific communities). Here is a couple of pictures of my dog Koda. You can tell how tall he is by the door knob.

That is Shadow...actually my father's dog, and I. SHE REALLY IS HUGE! and yeah, uncut. They also have another dobie with uncut ears. They really are cutier this way. I love dobies and one day when I have land...I will own some. I hate that insurence often won't cover your property if you have a dobie...that sucks. They are great dogs.

FWIW, I think Dobies, Boxers, and Schnauzers all look better with intact ears.
