New brand of aspen bedding @ Petsmart

I needed to replace my bag of aspen bedding yesterday. I buy the giant sized bags for like $13 a piece. Petsmart seems to no longer be selling Kaytee aspen, instead selling a new brand that, to me, the chips look a heck of a lot thicker and more "rough." I actually did not buy a bag because they looked almost like cedar chips-- that kind of thick, heavy look to them. Anyone else have this problem at their local Petsmart? I have no idea where to go now to get the giant bag.

Do you have a local Tractor Supply or Farm and Country? I know there's a Bowman's in Westminster if you don't mind the drive. You can also head to a reptile show and pick up aspen or sani-chip bales.

Was it sunseed brand? Sounds like it anyway. I tried it. Didn't like it. The only aspen I really like is the Kaytee Brand or I did use the finely shredded Aspen-1 brand for hatchlings once upon a time. To my nose, every other brand smells petroleum-y for some reason. :shrugs:

I've only ever been willing to use Kaytee too. :shrugs:
I know alot of places to get it online, but you'd be paying a heck of alot more than $13, plus the wait for it. :(

Do you have a petland nearby? That's where I get mine. The giant bags there are the same price as PSmart. My preference is Doc Fosters, but it's not quite as good a deal. Not bad if you're ordering other things, tho. It's very finely shredded and soft.

I came home from sledding to find that my pyre also thinks it's tasty. I have aspen chips all over my guest room. :p

I haven't had to buy new aspen in like 3 months with those Kaytee bags, but I'll check it out for you next time I go!

I am going to be down in Virginia this weekend and I'll see if I can find any in that area. I am really kind of irritated about this... it's bad enough for them to switch to some damn generic brand, but they didn't even drop the price! Worse comes to worse I just have to get aspen from the MD Reptile Farm... but it's $15 a bag from them. Bah! :realhot:

That might be the same brand Petsmart is now selling. Is it okay?? It just looked VERY thick to me and I wasn't certain I'd want that around my snakes.

It's a little chunky, but it works well enough. There's big knots in the bags, though. Kaytee aspen is better. I saw how coarse the other stuff was, and ordered kaytee over the internet. I was trying to save a couple bucks and bought a few bags of the stuff. I think I'll look for something else next time.

I like the kaytee brand too in the big bags.. It usually takes about 2 of them to fill all of my tubs.. I have always had bug problems with them though, so I am starting to freeze it now.. Anyone else have that problem? I think I'll check out our feed store out here.

I could only find the big chipped new bag too. It works okay. I do have a petland...in richmond. lol only 1 1/2 hour away!

try looking in the hamster isle of petsmart. they have a bran of aspen that looks (to me) to same as Kaytee but is cheeper. its a huge bag. im actually out of it now and i dont remember the name, but if you go down that isle your should see it. ive used it since i got Sam a year ago and have never had any problems (mites, knots, ect...)

i use Premier Pet aspen and its nice, some larger chunks but very few and the shavings not thick i have never found the Kaytee brand so I use Premier Pet and its works nicely

i use the giant bags too and when i clean out all 32 snake cages it takes 2 to 2 1/2 bags

i buy it at Petco in the rodent section

The 'cheap' brand at my local Petco is really susceptible to mold for some reason.. I don't know which brand that was but it did the same to me 3 bags in a row. I don't even think my humidity is that high either.. Really dusty too.

What I'm curious about is that tiny 'square chipped' stuff I often see in peoples' photos of snakes.. Anybody know what brand that is?

I pick up horse bedding aspen. I pick it up from a local co-op store with bags larger than the Kaytee bags for only $5.
I run to the store and buy about $20 at a time, it lasts me a few months. I use it for my rodents and reptiles alike. Its finely shredded and to me a pretty good product.

After all this talk of mites and dust, you guys are really tempting me to just switch to paper towels.

I switched to newspaper.. ;) But I have a double cage on display that always gets aspen, even though none of my tubs do. I just don't like the 'look' of newspaper..
