New Cornsnake owner in SC.....

Hi guys. My wife bought me a cornsnake for my birthday on November 2nd. He was around 14/15 inches when I got him. No idea how old he is because she got him from petsmart. I would guess a few months old. He has eaten every 5 days since then and is growing like a weed. He will eat right in front of me as soon as I drop the pinky in which I was glad of. I have him in a 10 gallon critter cage with UTH. I am going to bump up to 20 gallon first of the year. 4 days ago his eyes turned gray for two days then back to normal. Then, yesterday when i went to check on him, I found a perfectly intact shed skin. I was pumped! You could see his pattern, eyes and all. He is very easy to handle and seems to be the perfect pet corn snake right now. I will post a picture b/c I don't really know what morph he is. He is red, gray and black with some beige outlines. Does anyone have any idea how old he might be. His shed skin was 17 inches long. I have him eating one pinky every 5 days.

Welcome to the forums! Your wife is most excellent for giving you a snake for your birthday! Aren't they the best? Snakes, I mean. xD

And sounds like you're doing a good job! You can't tell the age of a snake just by size alone, unfortunately. They grow in proportion to how they're fed. Also, gauging size from a shed skin won't work either, as the skin stretches quite a bit when it's being sloughed off.

Can't wait to see pictures! :} Sounds like maybe he's a Normal, though, from your description...

Welcome to the forums! It' hard to say much with just a shed length, but sounds like it might be time to up the food size a tad.

Picture will help us tell age!

And congrats on the new baby, and welcome to the forums! It's nice to hear that your snake is a good eater, and a nice pet at that!

My corn is like 14-16 inches and i feed it 2 live pinkies a week it eats them one after the other so yours might be able to eat more. I def want mine to grow big :D

Welcome

Welcome to the forums. Always nice to see another Palmetto Herper on here. You have some herpers close to you in the greenville and Anderson area.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I'm definately thinking about trying to feed it two pinkies next feeding. I fed it one pinky last night and he downed it in about 30 seconds and looked like he was searching for food after. The pinkie I gave is barely the diameter of him so I think he could down two. Do you think this is too risky to try and feed two or should I give it a shot? He eats within two seconds of me dropping the mouse in.

Snakes are opportunistic eaters so if you put a second one in there he'll probably eat it. Sounds like a second pink won't hurt none. Your prey should be the width to 1 1/2 the width of the snake so you're doing fine. He'll be on fuzzies in no time.

Congrats on the new snake :)

I know how old he is! He's a 2009!! That's about as accurate as you're going to get...Mostly to decide what size prey to feed a snake we go by a rule of thumb that says you feed a prey that is no more than 1.5 times the diameter of the snake at its widest point. A more accurate way is to weigh the snake and then use the Munson Plan feeding guide.
