Hello All,

A little about myself. My name is Andrew or Andy, and I live in CT. Anyway, I am not new to snakes, I kept many as a kid and other reptiles, basically a zoo in my room. I'm now 30 married, with my first child on the way. My wife was very supportive in helping me reconnect with my child hood love of reptiles, in helping me pick out a corn snake. I kept many colubrids, ball pythons, and one awesome RTB for many years. I had to give everything away when i went to college. Anyway, I researched a ton (wow alot changed in 15 years) and settled on corn snakes due to the young family I have on the way.

I bought my CS at Petco (oh no!!) not my first choice, but I did not have any breeders I knew in the area and overnight for me was cost prohibitive because I was only getting one. In hindsight you get what you pay for. I got a snake that is kinked. I looked him over a bunch and didn't notice it at first. I am still with in my window to return him if need be, with a lesson learned. Frankly, I feel stupid for not just waiting to buy at a show or just get one shipped. However, I am a bit torn about the whole thing. The snake is great, he is super gentle, even when he eats he just goes up to the f/t pinky opens his mouth and downs it, no strike and no drama. He is great to handle as well. I feel terrible if he was to sit in Petco after I returned him and never find a home. I really should have known better.

Tough decision I have, but what advise can you all offer?

First of all this is the link to the breeders.... http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76317

Kinks can grow out. My friend had one with a kink near the last 1/3rd of it's body and a year later it has grown out. I would love it and keep it, since it is your first one in awhile and it's a great one from the way you talk about it. I would also browse everything on this site so next time you will be ready. BTW there will be a next time!!! Corns are like potato chips you can't have just one.

Lastly welcome to the site. There is a lot of great threads and people here to learn from.

There is nothing really wrong with a kink. There has been some talk about it being genetic and that we should try to not pass along the genes. In other words don’t use a kinked snake for breeding. But other than that a kinked snake should grow and make a great pet. It is possible for a kinked spine to be so bad that the snake can’t eliminate waste properly, but that is rare and unusual.

I’d say if you like it keep it. If you plan to breed one day, take it back.

welcome to the forum,

HOw bad is he kinked? Are you planning on breeding him? and where is he kinked? can you post a pict? I've head if you shut the lid on a tail it sometimes gets kinked. But i'm a newb and differ to a more knowledgeble person. if you have a Reptile Vet in your area you may wish to take him in to see what they say but if its only cosmetic keep him just dont' breed.

my 2 cents
good luck

I had planned on breeding down the road, but it doesn't mean I can't just make this one a pet. I am torn and I won't make a decision for another week and not until my wife is involved, I just noticed it. I have another 2 weeks to think about it on this return policy.

Micheal,

Thanks for sharing this. I did see this info, in fact I did contact Dean or Roy Munson as he is known around here. He is listed but doesn't breed as well as a few others in New England, but none local enough to drive. I missed the Metro show recently, because I was working on my nursery for the wife. Going forward I will support a breeder from this site.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to the forum!
I know Dean is no longer breeding, but I am lucky enough to have a few of the last ones he bred back in 2007.
As far as your Petco baby, he might be kinked, but he is apparently mite free and he eats (which are 2 hurdles to overcome when you get a pet shop baby).
If you like him, I think you should keep him and make a nice pet out of him. He can be your public relations snake :)

If you plan on breeding down the road, what I would do is study the photo gallery daily, and check out all the wonderful morphs, and see what you really like.
Then choose a morph (or 10 lol) and decide what projects you would like to work on down the road.
Then check out the breeders. Most ship. I know that shipping can be expensive, I have had ALOT of snakes shipped to me. But, I have never been disappointed yet.

Good Luck!

There is nothing wrong with having a kinked snake, I have 5 of them and I love them. If your's is eating then there is no reason it won't make a good pet. The only thing different about them is that you should not breed them.

Here are two threads about kinked snakes that are doing well.

If he's eating well and you don't plan to breed from him then there's no reason that he shouldn't live a full and comfortable life with you as a pet. Sounds like you're already getting attached to him anyways, which is what having a pet is all about really.

Some breeders cull kinked hatchlings when they hatch - many are so badly kinked that they'll never eat or survive. Some breeders (including myself) don't think that any form of kinking should be allowed into the gene pool and cull any with kinks; as they don't have ultimate control of who ends up owning the snake, they can't guarantee that kinked snakes will never be used for breeding. For them, it's a matter of responsibility in the widest sense.

But for you, it's a "one man-one snake" situation. If you're the right owner for him and he's the right pet for you, that's all you need to know.
