New One...Beyond Neat! LOL

The Snake Guru

Professional "Hooker"
Entirely aquatic with a puppy face...LOL otherwise known as the File Snake, Elephant Trunk Snake, Wart Snake or Karung (Acrochordus javanicus) ...LOL Lot's of common names anyway been looking forward to keeping this species for a VERY long time.

Just one shot at the moment, more I'm sure follow as he/she settles in.

Very cool! Are you going to attempt a breeding program at some point? My understanding is captive breeding is incredibly difficult with these things, but I don't really know. Any plans on giving it a go?

Very cool looking snake, for sure!

Thank you, possibily (I do love a challenge...LOL) At this point I'm just seeing if I can make it thrive, in all honesty this is the first time I've worked with an entirely aquatic snake species so I'm just "wading" in so to speak....be a long way off this one is just a youngster about 10" long.

Either way, very cool, indeed, even to have the opportunity to work with a fully aquatic snake. Thanks for sharing!

Very cool snake!

I've always been fascinated by what these would be like to keep, but from what little I've read, they also sound a bit difficult.

Good luck with him and keep us posted on his progress!

Thank you much! Should be quite enjoyable...I always enjoy working with stuff like this....off the beaten path species, so to speak.

I've seen Elephant snakes before, in horrible conditions in a zoo in Thailand -_-

I've never seen then anywhere else though, I'm impressed!

edit:
I found the picture, I think it was these guys, if I remember right.

Thanks much everyone!
I'm hoping with fact that it's young, and born in captivity (I'm sure from an already gravid female import) that it will adapt better to captivity....I've seen some pretty harsh imports myself.

I met an adult at CPR (my favourite reptile shop) a couple of years ago, fascinating snake, with an impresively warty skin!

That face is just too cute! Can't wait to see how he does for you. Keep us updated on that little one. Thanks for sharing with us.

It is just amazing how horribly such beautiful creatures could be kept. Just disgraceful. This little "elephant snake" is lucky to have landed with Brad.

I'm not familiar with those guys, so I looked them up. Very intriguiging species Brad. I'd be very interested to see how this guy progresses :) Keep us updated!

Great shot by the way. What a cute punam!

Wow, very cool!

As an avid fish keeper, I'm very intrigued! How do you heat his water? Aquarium heater? Does he eat primarily fish?

What a neat animal.

Well, my entire upstairs is kept around 82F so heating the water is not problem....addition of an compact flourescent for the Java Moss has been keeping the water at 83F ambiant but if you needed to heat it a submersable heater would do the trick. They eat a fish only diet from what I've read though I imagine other aquatic species could be incorperated into the diet....something I will be experimenting with as time goes on, however I did dump about half a dozen feeder fish in the tank last night before I went to bed....woke up and there are only 3 swimming around today...so looks like feeding isn't going to be an issue.

Thank you much everyone, I will certainly keep everyone updated as to the progress of how it's coming along.
