New Snake's Got Me Confused!?

Ok today I went to the Portland Reptile Expo in Portland ME. I didn't really have much money to buy anything that I really wanted but my father got me this "male" anery in a trade he did with some of his geckos he brought up to give to Regal Reptiles.

Now its a gorgous snake, about 3 1/2 feet long, almost 400g, and I think it might actually be a ghost. Now when I got home I took out the snake to show my brother (15) who did not come to the expo with me and we ended up getting in a little argument about who was longer, this snake or my 07 "female" amel who is about the same length. So at one point this argument got very heated (not in a bad way but it was funny) and we went down stairs and I took out my amel, Citrus, and layed them on the floor next to each other(I know! I know! breaks every quaretine rule. Its not something I usually do I'm sorry don't yell at me!). When as soon as that happened Citrus started getting all jerky and I'm thinking maybe shes being respondsive to the male and I wanted to see how this played out so I left them be. Well the suppossed female then crawled onto the suposed male's back and started rubbing her chin along the back and chasing him around. I took them apart and was very confused. So I then I put them in a 20gallon tank so they wouldn't dart and hide under something in my room. Once again Citrus the "girl" started courting the "male" rubbing her chin and chasing him. Then "she" started to try getting her tail under his and breed him. The anery wanted nothing to do with it for the most part but did slow down for a bit and seemed to allow the amel to try to breed "him". This whole thing did go on for about 20mins but eventually I did seperate them and they are in there own enclosures now.

Now I'm pretty sure at this point Citrus is not a she after seeing that bit but it shocked me because I've had them both probed before, Citrus about 6months ago and the other snake at the show today. Does this make the anery 100% a female if my amel reacted that way to it or is there a chance that since it was in an enclosure with other adult corns that its could smell like a female that was in the enclosure? Any info would help because this really did screw up my breeding plans for next year!?

Also it would be great if you guys could tell me weather "he" is a ghost or just a plain old anery. "He" seems really light in color for an anery and doesn't have very much black. Thanks for any help!

That sounds like breeding behavior to me. I definitely wouldn't put them together again unless you're prepared for 15 hatchlings that need heat, caging, and food. I'd also keep an eye on the one that was "bred" for signs of being gravid.
For future reference, if you want to know which snake is longer (without breaking quarantine practices), you might think about downloading SerpWidgets' snake measurer.
And the new addition looks like a Ghost to me. Other people will be able to tell you better than I can - i'm still somewhat of a newbie. :)

Don't worry there wasn't any actual hook up, I made sure of it. I wasn't planning on breeding until next season so I not really ready yet so I made sure they didn't actaully hook up. I'm actually surprised considering the breeding season is supossed to be over.

Two males together can exhibit this kind of behaviour as well - it's a display of dominance, with the snakes fighting to be the one "on top" (literally).

You either have a male and a female, or two males. I think the only permutation you PROBABLY don't have, is two females!

I've heard of that kind of thing with two males as well. The new snake really looks like a Ghost to me too.

Ok thanks, only way to tell I guess is to eventually test breed to a hypo. Also I guess the fighting idea could be right but if they were fighting would my amel try putting his under the ghosts and hook up?

I've heard you can get a total male on male hookup as part of a dominance fight.

Hooooly! That's a confusing little story... I had to go back to the beginning to check which one was supposed to be which! Maybe you have 2 males... maybe you have a male and female... try breeding... see who ends up laying the eggs, if anyone! Good luck with that! And yeah, the looks like a ghost... I've found that normals (as adults) seem to be more red-ish/orange-ish than brown!

I never have been able to get the snake measurer to work. After doing the first step, when I start the step of actually measuring the snake, nothing at all happens when I click on the points on the snake to measure it. Is there any other similar program out there that WORKS???

Just a thought about courting behavior, in some animals certain behaviors are dominance behaviors as well as sexual behaviors. Mounting in canids, for example, is commonly done by both males and females to indicate dominance. In many species, females will mount a male sexually when shei s in heat, to try to "turn him on." Masturbation is also common in both males and females in many species (and also not uncommon even in spayed and neutered animals!!!)
