New tracking db app

Couple updates/fixes

Just uploaded v0.12 for anyone interested. This version includes an update check, so I won't need to keep letting people know when updates are available. Details and file download at the usual spot: http://www.savagecorns.com/utils.htm

I'm guessing that the lack of feedback is a good sign that things are working alright (at least I hope, lol). Feel free to send me any bugs/ideas or wishlists, though.

Excellent, I started playing with it and started a list of wishes, :grin01: but so far there's only one, so I'll play with it more and see if there are more... Thanks

So far, I can only think of a couple things that would make it more convenient than it is. As far as the look and performance of the program, I have not encountered any issues, and it is an incredibly NICE looking application to work with.

However, since you asked ;) :

First, it would be nice to be able to type in dates, rather than ONLY select them from a calandar. Granted, it is a VERY minor issue, but when inputting a snake that is 3-4 years old, it gets a bit slow trying to backtrack through the calandar to select a date rather than just typing it in.

Second, while the mouse inventory DB is a great feature, it doesn't provide options for tracking live offspring as they grow, without wasting product(that I have found). That would be a nice additional feature.

It would also be nice to have the ability to disable the feeder inventory. If you only have a couple snakes, feeder inventory isn't that important, you simply feed what you have. But as it currently is, I cannot list a feeding unless I have the mice in inventory, and that can be frustrating at times. Disabling the inventory feature *might* be more convenient for some users.

After thinking about it, I'd agree that the option to disable the feeder inventory, or just "write in" feeders while you're in the actual "add feed record" window, would be nice.

I have run into a few problems. Items that should be in the database are not available in the drop menu, ie: mouse medium is in database, but only mouse pink and mouse fuzzy appear in menu. Same has happened with a couple morphs. I've tried to add them to the database, since they didn't appear in the menu, but am then told the morph is already there, so can't be added.

Also, text in the note window don't appear to be saved.

I'll have to look into these. The morph issue might be fixed if you get the latest update, as I did find a little bug with the morph and gene tables in the database. The feeder one is completely new to me, but I'll definitely see what I can find.

As for the suggestions, my list has been updated. Just to address the date entry quick... I originally was going to allow manual entry, but then ran into the problem of entry formatting. Basically, the database stores dates in seconds from epoch (i.e. number of seconds from 1970), to make date related comparisons and calculations easier in the code. So in order to account for manual entry, I need to be able to predict every possible format that someone might type in. Short of that, the other option would be to have separate fields with dropdowns for each part (month, day and year), but that wouldn't look as nice. This was one of the areas that I went back on forth on for awhile, because I agree it can be tedious going back in time a ways. No promises on this one, but I'll think about it some more and see what I can come up with that works and looks nice.

Thanks for all the input, it's really helping to tweak this thing and turn it into everything I had in mind when I started on it.

Jaxom--

Are you sure you have "Mouse Medium" inventoried? If you don't have an add-count in inventory, it won't show up when you add a feeding activity to the record. Sort of one of the issues I had...you need to have a food item inventoried in order for it to show up as an option when you list a feeding date for the snake...

That is correct, and was just going to mention that. Thanks for catching it for me. While looking at the feeder inventory stuff, I have noticed a couple quirks that I didn't catch before, so I'm working on those and will hopefully have them fixed today or tomorrow. In the meantime, just make sure to pad the inventory on hand to avoid any issues. Sorry about this oversight. Shouldn't be a show-stopper, but definitely a priority.

Just installed it. Fantastic, looks really good.

Only thing is the only currency is dollars $, not a big prob tho :)

I only have on snake at the mo anyway so was only having a play around with the prog. he he

Oh and another thing i had to add mice to my inventory when adding back dated feeds. I suppose the mice would have been in my inventory at one time before the snake ate them lol

Thanks for providing this for us, i can't wait to add more snakes to it :grin01:

Yes, I have mouse medium inventoried. It says I have 23 left, but when I try to make a feed record for the snake that day, only pink and fuzzy are on the menu. Mouse medium worked the first time I recorded my Taiwan Beauty's feeding, but then disappeared. If I try to update inventory, it's there.

Huh...I never ran into that. I had issues when I went to "backlog" all my past feedings. I went back to december of last year, and had to really pad my inventory to avoid going back and forth, but once I put a mouse in inventory, it was always available to me. I don't know.

I do know that after I got my feedings all up to date, I had to go in and "waste" a lot of inventory. Luckily, since I breed my own feeders, the total cost was always $0, so it didn't take any cost-loss into account.

I don't know what could be causing you to have that issue... :shrugs:

I tried the "padding", telling it I had 1000 Mouse Mediums. It decided to let me feed some to my snake :) I'll correct the inventories as soon as I finish logging my feedings on all my snakes. It is a dynamite program, even if there are some minor problems.

I know I said I wouldn't keep posting update announcements here, but found a potentially big bug this evening that I have fixed, so I would recommend anyone using this app to download and install the update when prompted. Basically, if you tried to enter a value with an apostrophe in it, the SQL code wasn't recognizing that character properly, so could mess up some existing records. I found that bug the hard way, so hopefully no one else has found it. Just want to try and warn everyone before hand. And this underscores the primary lesson when working with data (and especially beta apps)... make frequent backups. Sorry if anyone got hit with this one.

And FYI, for anyone running on non-Windows OS, the autoupdate probably won't work, but all you have to do is go to the utilities page on my site and download the ScerpDB jar file to your program directory.

Love the new stuff!! Absolutely love it!

I put all of my substrate change dates and water changes (for the fish tanks) in there. :) :) :)

More choices?

I'd like to make a suggestion concerning color choices. Currently, the options for color genes are "Phenotype", "Genotype" and "Not Exists". Would it be possible to expand this to "Phenotype", "Genotype", "66% Possible", "50% Possible", "Possible", and "Not Exists"? The possible hets, as well as their probabilities, play an important role in mating choices, and it'd be nice to have all the data available at a glance.

Hi Bob,
I just got an error message when I was trying to add a snake. I went ahead and set up the rack layouts without adding the name of the snake figuring I would go back and add the snake to the designated bin in each rack. When I went to add the snakes name the error read as follows...............

Specified ID already exsists. All ID's must be unique.

I found this odd so I went and made up fictitious names to see if it would work and I got the same error. Could you please look into this and help me resolve my problem. Thanks in advance.

That's in the "ID Number" slot. Each snake needs to have a unique identification tag attached to it. I got the same error the first time I tried inserting snakes.

I simply made up different tags such as: "05femCORN", "06femCorn", "05malCORN", "06femFLORIDA", etc, denoting each snake by year, sex and ssp. It worked after that, but each snake I input needed a unique ID tag...

Yeah...I got the same error message. The thing is I had added Selena (CS-05-0004) previously and put in her clutch laid yesterday. The next time I opened it she was nowhere to be found yet it gave me the error. No clue...I can't find her at all.

Have you downloaded the latest update? I think that is the issue that Duff just put up an update for...

The ID tag needs to be unique by design. Each animal needs some unique identifier to track it's info and records. Sorry for any confusion it caused. I know I really need to write up some howto's and more help info, just haven't had the time and that's lower on my priority list right now.
