Corn Snakies

Corn Snakie
:santa: Alright, so I was wondering... I've done research on Corn Snakes and a few others, found that a Corn Snake would be best to have. Though, was thinking it was a *little expensive to feed one a mouse or two a week, so I looked at crickets and they seemed to be cheaper, but less quality and for other types of snakes. I perfer large ones, but nothing with danger and for a total newbie. XD

Back to the topic of lovely CORN SNAKES, as i'm currently guessing would be best to have, I have absolutely nothing to start out with, so I decided to ask these questions..

Where would be a good place to get a big enough container for one? Would it have to be 20 gallons if I were to keep the snake till its fully an adult :eek1: and I think it'd be nice for having something other than glass. I'm clueless to finding something really nice and small, yet large enough. And not too expensive... Under $70? Would I absolutely have to have another thing just for feeding the snake?

Also, being chilly in Michigan, i'll for surely need some type of heater or heating device. Was thinking of using a light, but that's not the best idea so i've heard. And they're selling some type of heating things at Walmart? I'll need something to keep it living, but something inexpensive and nice. >> Any ideas?

It may appear like I havent dont any research at all, lol x.x but i'm wondering about the good quality items for a good cost here. *The best deal.

just so you know you can't feed crickets to a snake... different digestive system than a lizard that would eat a cricket. And if you feed frozen/thawed mice it really isn't expensive. I pay about 30 cents per mouse for the frozen ones. Just thought I'd let you know. :)

Well, there are plenty of threads regarding several of the things you are wondering about if you search for the right terms. A 20gal long is considered by most the minimum size enclosure for an adult corn. As far as price I just got one for 32 bucks at a local pet store (not a petco, petsmart type place). As far as options other than glass I would search for threads. You can always go for a sterilite type of container, but for a pet snake that you will probably want sort of "on display" this wouldn't be the best idea (though probably the cheapest) Yes in Michigan you will almost definitely need heat in the winter unless you keep the room very warm. UTH's aren't very expensive and are pretty much a standard for heating. And as mentioned by Hana no crickets. Mice aren't that expensive. Hope some of these ideas help.

Ah, you cant? How odd, because it said on the container it could be fed to snakes. o_O well, alright. Was just hoping for a cheaper way, but 30 cents?!?! :eek1: :eek1: WOwwwwW??? I've only heard it was about $1 for a mouse elsewhere, perhaps its different depending on where ya go. ^^ I will check it out.
Thanks for your reply :D meep!

O_O that's nice! I'd hope to find some for that cheap too. ^_^ I guess i'll go with glass, it just seems pretty heavy, and wondering about average sizes for a 20-gal.. Seems pretty big for carrying usages i'm guessing?
Kay, no crickies. ^_^ thanks for your reply muchly!!

By the way, whats UTH stand for and where can I get one of those? I tried Ebay but no results came. Need one for a 20 gal. glass tank.

If you can not afford $1 a mouse each week to feed your corn, you really shouldn't get one. :) $0.30/mouse is usually purchasing in bulk frozen rodents. www.rodentpro.com is a good supplier of frozen rodents that I have had great success with.

As far as other options for houseing...You can use sterlite containers (VERY cheap)...PVC caging (Visions , MD Custom Caging , Showcase , Boaphile , and many more)...or the basic glass tank...

Don't feed your cornsnake crickets, but just for the record many snakes eat crickets water snakes, garter snakes and green snakes are a few as well as young snakes of many other species.

UTH = Under Tank heater.

Wow! ! Nice website for buying mice, and of course I can afford mice, but was only looking around to save a -little cash if possible. Thanks so much for the links, they're really very helpful indeed! (^__^) I will see what I can do.
Thank-you much once again!!!

Just an option, glass tanks are an obvious choice for a pet snake (as opposed to someone having a large number), they can be decorated to look great and house the snake with all the comforts it wants (and needs).

UTH, Under Tank Heater can be found on e-bay or at most pet stores and I strongly recommend using a thermostat to control these as they can get too hot for the snake.

Another option as you enquired about is a lamp. Many people have success with these but many will argue that they do not provide belly heat, however if you have a tank that is decorated to look somewhat natural, situate the lamp over a flat rock, there is your belly heat. If you do decide to use this method you can raise this rock up with a few smaller rocks to provide a hide under it as well, allowing your snake to choose where to bask. Just make sure this top rock is very secure as corns are incredibly strong for their size. The rock also retain some of this heat into the night. It doesn't get any less expensive than a walk in the woods to find a rock, make sure you wash it spotlessly clean with bleach and water and thoroughly dry it off to kill any possible nasties.

Tanks can be found at super bargains from garage/yard sales at times, at worst you will have to clean it and buy a secure screen top.

Good luck and welcome.

Ah, Thanks for great advice!!! So now I know another way to create belly heat for snakies, this helps alot! :D very appreciated!

Well, looks like you got some good information and responses to your post. So as CAV would say, "time for harassment". This was in no way more interesting than ivory boobs :grin01:

Wow, WAT...I think you went a bit over board there. Cost of mice has already been covered (and in a much nicer way, I might add). Please tone it down a little bit. He is doing the right thing by ASKING for help.

Woah, I know absolutely the expensives of keeping animals, I have five of them, (2 cats, a dog, 2 birds) which are even more expensive keeping than just a snake. Was only asking for the best of the best in deal wise :D
