Not growing...frustrated...

Kilala

lemme go! I'm sleeping!
Hey, guys. I bought Cornflakes on March 30th, 2007. Pet vender had already had her for 5 weeks when i bought her. So I suppose it's safe to assume she is about 6 months old now. She was 10g when I got her. Now she's 29g, but I can't see any difference in size! she's only shed twice since I've had her, though she's due to go blue soon. She doesn't seem any bigger! I'm a little frustrated, because I've heard that they do most of their growing in their first year of life. She's about a foot long now. any thoughts?

She's tripled in mass, shed twice- she's growing!! Have you measured her length with snake measuring software, which is more accurate than trying to stretch her out or measuring a shed? She sounds like she's doing wonderfully, to me!

Roxanne hatched on May 15th, 2006. When I got her in February we weighed in at 24 grams.

I weighed her on Monday of this week and she’s now at 42.42 grams. So in the 4 month’s I’ve had her she hasn’t even doubled her weight yet. However, once she hit the 30 gram mark, I was able to visually tell the difference in her size. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

Roxanne has been very active, eating normally (I had 1 regurge back in March), has shed for me twice and is blue right now. She might be a little small, but I really can't ask for anything else.

I wouldn’t worry too much, they are just as individualistic as people are.

Regards,
Steve

I think your expectations of her growth is probably unrealistic. She has shed an average of once per month for you which is perfect timing for juvenile snakes. and she has added weight each meal proportionately to the meal size it seems. Gaining 20 grams in two months is great for a snake this size. once they gradually get big enough to start taking larger food items then they will grow quicker.

Larger food mass= more retained body mass = faster growth

Be patient and enjoy the little one. Maybe with your next snake you could look for a yearling though so it is well into its growth spurt! :)

She'll grow! Just be patient!

Tootse was born last July (as an '06) and before I switched her to Fuzzies (24 days ago) she was only 34 grams. Now, in three and a half weeks of fuzzies, she's up to 56 grams!

She's visibly larger and you'll be able to see Cornflakes growing like a weed soon enough. Half the fun of any animal is enjoy it's baby years. ;)

Part of it is that you don't really notice the growing; especially if you're looking at her day to day. What you should do is to take a picture of her after every shed; then go back and look at some of the older pictures and you'll be amazed.

A growing animal is a gradual process. One day you will pull your snake out of the tank to handle and think how big they look today. Or, take some pictures of her as she is now. In a few months time, take a picture of her as she is then. Compare them and you will see the difference.

Patience is key here. All snakes grow at different rates and as long as she IS growing (which her weight gain shows she is) there is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I pull her out very often, almost every day (just not after she's fed, I wait about 2 days). Maybe I just don't notice it because I look at her so much. And besides, she's healthy, has never refused a meal or had a regurge, and that's gotta mean something. You guys are right, I probably don't notice her growth because it's so gradual, lol.

I'd suggest that most of their growth actually happens in their second year as they usually go from 100 to 300 grams. However a growth from hatching size of 5 to yearling size of 100 grams, that's 2,000% size gain, compared to the 200% expected in the second year.

Anyway, unless you are keeping track by measuring you won't notice your snake growing, but next time you see a hatchling you'll be saying "Wow! that's tiny! my snake is so big!". 27 grams at 6 months isn't huge but it isn't too shabby.

I would also suggest taking some pictures, I've been taking monthly pictures of my guy in the same box every time and its amazing to look at the difference. I'm sure it would be hard to tell otherwise. ;)

Are you feeding large enough prey items? Cutting slits in the back of the mouse will help with digestion and she should grow a little faster that way. Ever since I started slitting all of the prey for my corn snakes they have all been growing faster than they did previously. Less waste as well, less crap to clean up.
