So Basil past away. It happened a couple weeks ago and didn't want to post. I was pretty sure everyone would think I was an idiot after losing my second snake [emoji37]

Turns out the place I got both my snakes from had lost all but 2 out of the batch they got in. I really wish I would of known that after losing Peanut but guess that wouldn't be something they would share. They did refund me so I guess there is that. I have been really patient and have passed on a couple I have seen (not the same store) but there is a reptile show coming up next Saturday and was wondering what the opinion is on shows. Maybe some tips on finding a good healthy snake!

I can't help with reptile shows since I live in Scotland but when buying a snake, they should be active and curious, not sluggish. Check for retained sheds, and that they are not thin (thin snakes have a triangle body shape). Get feeding and shedding records if possible. Also, talk to the breeder and see if they seem like a good, knowledgable person. When I got my corn from a local reptile store, the staff were super friendly and knew exactly what they were talking about, which made me feel a lot better about buying from them [emoji4] good luck for when you get your new snake!

I am so sorry. That's absolutely heartbreaking. Yes, I think it is the source rather than you. You are not an idiot and what has happened to you is very sad. Glad they refunded you. I hope you will try another snake from a different source. I send you hugs and sympathy. I know you loved them both.

P.S. Shows can be a great source. I might suggest getting a little larger snake. Try to get one upwards of 15 grams. That should not be hard considering even the later babies should be a few months old by now. Look for tongue flicking and good muscle tone. I got my Cleo at a show from one of the larger breeders. Large or small breeder you can meet and ask questions of the vendor at the show. Be sure to get morph, sex, hatch date and you can usually get last feeding date and prey size if you ask.
 
I am so sorry! Like everyone else said, it's probably not your fault, just a sick snake from the details you gave. Like Dollysmom said, if you decide to get another snake, get one that is a little older.
 
Just wanted to add my support - I am so sorry for your loss!

Even if you're not absolutely ready to adopt, going to a reptile show is a great way to connect with breeders in your area and look at various morphs! Lots of people overlook a yearling (or older) for the cute factor of a baby. An older snake definitely has great qualities- more stable feeding habits, temperament, and such.
 
Thanks everyone I feel a lot better. I will with out a doubt get a bigger snake. Peanut was 8g Basil was 15g so I am going bigger. Just very frustrating to go through it all. It is bad enough that I had to deal but had my 9 yo was really attached to both also. She is shying away from getting another but that is fully understandable but know as soon as one comes home she will love him.

Also, even getting a snake at say, 50 grams, means they still have loads of growing left to do but they're out of the dangerous hatchling size [emoji4]
I hope your daughter likes your new snake, it's a shame for her to loose two so quickly [emoji853]
