so i got my corn thursday, and could not be more thrilled/pissed. for anyone who saw my last thread those weren't scars they were rolls! This is my first snake and i feel rather pathetic for being so pissed off and annoyed but when i saw the condition this snake was in i got so mad. i am thrilled that it will no longer be living where it was but rather in my care. the snake came just in a regular old tank, not complaining about that. it was on a carpet, i know many people use that not complaining there either. the hide HUGE.. the "water" dish barely and inch high and actually a feeder dish + it was all moldy and the paint was peeling off because its NOT a water dish! :headbang: there was nothing else in the enclosure aside from that.. the heat source a dingy little light that barely heated anything. the snake itself, i dont think i will ever see a snake this overweight again. she has huge hips and her scales are folded because she is fat she rolls everywhere plus i can she the skin through almost all her scales in her thicker region. she was being fed rats every 7-10 days :headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang: I was already planning to feed her mice but i am thinking i will slowly ease her into once a month feedings. maybe 3/4 mice (one a feeding) at two week intervals another 3/4 and three week intervals than finally into every four weeks.. how does that sound? idk if i have to ease her into it or not i just dont want to shock her system (if that even is a thing with snakes)

concerning the rest: the water dish, i immediately went out and got a deeper dish. the light i replaced the bulb + got a uth. i got her a branch and switched out the carpet for moss (though i know that wasnt necessary but i prefer it and she went nuts when she got in it :dancer: the hide i will replace when she gets thinner as i want something real nice and cozy.

here are some pictures of her (btw i know i cant tell whether its a male/female but idk why i just like referring to her.. as a her haha xD sorry..)

I understand your feelings, damn that is one of the most overweight snakes I have ever seen. Your diet is a good plan add A LOT of exercise and she should do well. Do you have a yard or some other place she can stretch out and crawl as much as possible? I am glad you have her now a fat snake is bad. Very high risk of health issues possibility of organ failure.

yea and it just makes me mad that these people had her like this for the last 8 or so years.. ugh how does a person not realize? Okay though, thank you. Yea so far I have been taking her out a few minutes a day and letting her just explore my arms because I don't want to overwhelm her just yet but I do plan on taken her out frequently I'm just going to wait a few more days though. Yeah, I know. Ugh, the thing is every now and then when she moves to much I can hear her breathing.. I'm hoping it not a respiratory infection and simply just her weight, its still not good obviously but if it is at least it will go away with the weight. I will keep a close eye on it though.. or ear rather haha

Is her tail that fat too, or is there some missing (bad shed - lost tail tip maybe?)
She even seems to have 'fat cheeks' (in the headshot)
I'm glad to hear you're helping her/him. Just think of how this will help you (grin) you'll have serious muscle from holding her up on your arms while she 'works out"
Do you have any idea of hir weight?
Nice colors in the pic - I bet they are even richer in person.

Maybe you should start a 'weight watchers' thread. This is probably something a lot of people should know about - How to safely lose weight on a snake, and determining what a healthy weight snake should look/feel like.

Wow, very chubby! I also noticed that it looks like she's missing the tip of her tail, probably from retained sheds. If you have stairs, you can let her climb up and down them. Swimming (if she doesn't hate it) can also be a good exercise because it exercises the whole body. You can just put a few inches of lukewarm water in your tub and supervise her while she swims. Keep us updated and make sure to post progress pictures!

My guess is that she was fed rats. Most Corns that I have seen fed rats look like that, or close.
It will take time to get (her) back down to a healthy weight.
Giver her lots of branches and stuff to climb in her enclosure.

Yes she is missing the tip :( yea idk not sure how "fat" her head should normally be but she seems pretty thin to me up there (head/neck) he is very heavy though. I didn't have interest in weight before i got her but considering what a change she will be going through i am seriously considering picking one up.

I don't have stairs, and im afraid my mom will flip if i use the tub but she will get excercise outside, throughout my room, and on my bed (i have a loft bed she'll have fun xD)

yes she was every 7-10 days one small rat. i mentioned it in my original post :)
yup already on that putting in as many as i can :)

Yikes--thank goodness she's found you!

Others have already chimed in with most everything I'd say, except that guessing by the tail shot (though her weight makes an already unreliable method even less certain), I'd say you're right about her being female.

I've also had luck slowly thinning down an obese, rat-fed male I acquired (on a weanling-every-two-weeks diet), so I'm sure she'll be fine in time. Keep at it!

Catherine

Wow,she has wonderful coloring. Too bad she was overfed and her tail neglected. Glad you can give her a proper home.

Thanks everyone! I will keep you posted as in maybe once a month LOL. It will be a very slow process but once I start to see a difference I will update you all with pics!

Funny, I was reading today, "What's Wrong with my Snake?" by John Rossi, DVM, the part about obesity in snakes and I thought of this thread again. Your instincts are correct. You need to decrease the food slowly, and it is very important. He recommends decreasing the food 25% per month over three months and then moving to maintenance levels. He says never to put a snake on a crash diet. It's an interesting book, though about a wide variety of snakes, not just corns.

That's true I guess.

Oh I see hmm.. Never heard of it xD what would be a 25% decrease though? :/ not sure how I would measure that as its not just how frequent but also from rats to mice. Unless that doesn't come into play and just te fact that the snake is being fed to begin with..

Use a scale to weigh the food and get at close as possible. A range in drop of 20-35 percent is the ok. Keep a log so you don't have to guess.
