Both of them remove red. Somehow they prevent the snake's skin from making red pigment. And if the snake is heterozygous, enough of the necessary gene product (protein) gets made that the snake has the normal amount of red. But they have to prevent different steps in the red-making process, because a double het, het anery A & het anery B, is classic colored. So let's say there are 5 steps in the red-making process for discussion's sake, something like this:

Substance A is turned into B by protein a
Substance B is turned into C by protein b
Substance C is turned into D by protein c
Substance D is turned into E by protein d
Substance E is turned into red pigment by protein red maker

If Anery A is an animal that doesn't have any protein a and Anery B is an animal who doesn't have any protein b then the double heterozygote has 1/2 the normal level of a and 1/2 the level of b and looks normal because a low amount of a or b gets the job done. This means the genes for them are at different loci, maybe even on different chromosomes.

Hypo and strawberry are at the same locus and act on the same protein (we could call it h), so you can have a homozygous hypo snake or a hypo/strawberry or a homozygous strawberry. Amel & ultra, same thing, you can have amels, ultras or ultramels.

Just keep in mind I made up the A, B, C, D etc, I don't know what real geneticists are using as the symbols for corn snake color genetics.

I will say with 99% certiantly that Kohl is an Anery A. Anery A hatchlings are contrasty like that, and their saddle tone can range from dark black to brown. In fact, black saddles generally turn brown over time. Charcoals (anery b) are not as contrasty. Their backgrounds are usually not as stark white. and they are more irridecent.

Here's a picture that I found on the web. The Charcoal is on top and the Anery A is on the bottom. It's just one of those things that becomes easy to identify over time.

Oh and one final note: I think Kohl is absolutley gorgeous! He's a great example of an Anerythristic. I hope he keeps that clean background as he ages. Keep us updated!

They're both gorgeous animals!! I hope Kohl ends up half as pretty as the Anery A in the pic!!

I saw told that I really scored on the snakes I bought...I got all three for under $50...and that Coral has real good breeding potential with her genes!!

So it looks like we're going to be breeding cresties AND corns...when the corns grow up!!

BTW-in my vernacular, "?" = he/she/it-LOL!!
