Betcha that "ghost corn" is just a great basin gopher snake they found in the back yard!!! (I'm not great at IDing pituophis, either... heh)

I've cut down to checking craigslist just every couple of weeks. Too much stupid, my brain can't handle it!
Here's one that caught my attention today. Because a 10 gallon tank and no water is totally acceptable for 2 fast-growing future bulldozers...

I wonder what happens to their new puppy when it grows up and the kids get tired of it. Makes me sad they they're teaching their kids it's ok to get pets and then just discard if them whenever you feel like it.

Marzi, I have such mixed feelings on that part of it.. On the one hand... Absolutely agreed. Getting rid of them because, oh, a puppy! Is just irresponsible, depressing, and such a bad example. But on the other hand, I'd rather see them sell the torts to someone who will appreciate them than keep them (and probably neglect them) to make a point. Bit of a catch 22. :(

The guy I bought Jax's mice from has one he keeps in a fenced space in his basement. His, appropriately named Baby, was still just a young one too and was massive. So cool, but not a good pet for the general public.
 
Especially up in Canada, Afrederi! They stand a better chance here in southern California, since they can be outdoors pretty much the whole year once large enough... But there are still a lot that wind up in bad situations, at any size/age. Especially hatchlings.
 
Can't wait to see the ad for the puppy that the kids found more interest in than the sulcatas. I figure about the time the puppy turns 6 months old they will have gotten bored with that too....
 
Sulcatas are definitely one of those I wish weren't so commonly available ... Seems like very few of those who buy them actually have the resources to take care of them when they are full grown. The kind of crappy mom n pop pet store here usually has a hatchling or two for sale at any given time.
 
There's a guy in our area that goes around educating people about them. Travels all over several states with a heated/cooled trailer with a number of rescued sulcatas....he has some that are huge.....over 40 years old. He puts them out on the grass where he stops and it usually draws a pretty big crowd. He raises funds to help educate and rescue pets that people don't have the space for......
 
omg Poor Sulcatas.... :( and that corn snake even I could tell it wasn't a corn.. :(

Holy moly.. a couple of years ago I walked into the dog shelter and people were laughing.. I wondered what it was bout, they said: someone called us, she had to be drunk she was talking about a turtle the size of a manhole lid.... I go: Oh it's probably a sulcata on the run.... they go: you serious? they exist? My answer: yeah... they do...

Thank God they had number collector, they called the lady back, and me and the other dog trainer went and picked him up and he was 16 and had walked a whole 3 miles from that morning.. he had escaped a back yard...

Thanks, it was a fun little adventure.. I was working with the city of long beach shelter here in NY for a while when it was run by the idiots of Rescue Ink... They got in this guy we found his owner later that day, a couple of retics, boas, and these guys kept together in way too small of a tank.. that nothing happened was a miracle.. we also got a kayman in... smh... animals people had tried to sell on CL but failed... they dumped them outside...

Here is more of the sulcata, as you can see he hasn't been flawless taken care of either, the shell is supposed to be smooth, not pyrmides.

hmm apparently I lost the pics of the snakes.. that poor reticulated was skin and bones... we found them a good home, same guy took them all... then sandy hit a few months later :( they didn't make it trough the cold.. I slept with my monitor lizard in the bed to keep him warm...

So yeah CL animals that doens't get sold ends up in the shelter system just like any other animal...
 
It's always good to know that my cornsnakes have no teeth.....not sure what was sticking me during feeding responses though.....must have been those pesky sharp gums!
 
Lol! I also like the fact that it's 4 years old and only eating frozen mice smaller than a 1/2 dollar once every 10 days.... People kill me. I'm so glad I did my research so I don't harm my snake and look like a complete idiot.
 
My favorite Craigslist ads are the "Free Bunnies!" Ads. Lol. Where do they think the bunnies are going to wind up?
 
Lots of the ones on kijiji (Free bunnies and mice) say "NO SNAKE OWNERS" on the ad. But now when I search "snake" those come up haha.
 
Hahaha... Tiffy, I encountered the same problem all the time on the WA craigslist sections... Well, if you don't want it to be snake food, why did you put SNAKE in the ad? And yeah.... "Free... BUT NO SNAKE FOOD!" Uh, sure, just keep telling yourself that.

Zeina, I took it to mean no bigger around than a 1/2 dollar coin? Adult mice usually fall within that range... Can't see much of the body, but what little I can see doesn't look underweight at all.
 
Oh geez!! As far as the other cornsnake eating a smaller mouse...I have an adult corn that came from small parents.....she's very slender, and maybe 300 grams....she takes adult mice...or maybe, just maybe an undersized weanling mouse. Just depends upon the size of the snake. Not all cornsnakes are large. Every 10 days is more than adequate feeding for an adult cornsnake. Mine don't get fed that often.
