Oh no! He regurgitated!!!

Ok, so I fed Mr. Grumpy Pants 2 days ago. I picked him up today and he still had a HUGE lump from feeding. I mentioned it to my Hubby, who said that he was probably fine and just not quite finished digesting. Well, Mr Pants crawled into my sweater and hung out there for about 5 minutes. I reached in and pulled him out and his lump had moved up. I was able to place him on the table just in time for him to regurg his 2 pinkies.

He is in blue (I think) I have a pic of his eyes if that would help? This is the first time he has regurged. I'm worried! Could this have been caused from him going into blue after he ate? Or was this me holding him too much or too soon, or holding in blue? Or could this just be a random occurrence?

I am going to search the site and see what I can find about regurg protocol, but if anyone feels like typing it all in one place for me that would be awesome. We should really make this a sticky. Do I need NutriBac? Or can I use a human Probiotic? My hubby and I are in Canada and don't have a ton of money right now due to my medical problems. So if it is not detrimental to him, can I go the rout of human probiotics?

Thanks so much everyone.
Amanda

i dont know about the human probiotics,
you dont have to go with the nutribac, i didn't when mine regurged, but i understand it helps out
one of the most important things to do is to give them 8-10 days before feeding again
and then when you do feed, feed something a lot smaller than normal
also, next time consider not handling the snake if the lump is still visible (even if you have given 48 hrs of digesting)

Oh Gee... I guess I should have thought of that. D'oh. I figured "hey it's been 2 days... lets hold him. Hmm he has a lump.... oh well."

Dang... so I caused his regurg... :headbang:

That was going to be my response as well. I wouldn't worry about the Nutribac as much as I would waiting to feed again in 10 days. I'd cut back to 1 pinky and try to slit it to help in digesting. If it regurges again then I'd be sure to get Nutribac. I'm not sure about human probiotics either. Also, as was said previously, be sure not to handle if you see a lump make sure you give 2-3 days before handling after feeding.
Good luck, and be sure to keep us updated.

Thank you :) I have been feeding 2 pinkies, both of them were slit to aide in digestion. I didn't know not to handle until he had fully digested, I thought it was just the 2 day thing. I will try him again in 10 days as long as he has shed.
I am very impressed that Mr. Grumpy Pants (who has been exceptionally grumpy today as he is blind) Didn't try to tag me once after he had smelt that it was me :D

Sounds like I should be chopping up his next pinkie into 3 pieces or so? Do I need to step from 2 pinkies down to a pinkie head, or would 1 pinkie be a sufficient step down? He normally eats like a champ, and loves his food. Even tries to tag me after he has eaten 2 pinks because I smell like mouse and he wants more!

I'd go back down to 1 pinkie for a couple of feeds, to let his digestion settle.

Remember that just because they act like they *want* more, doesn't mean they actually *need* more.

there could have been other factors, don't beat yourself up yet
since there was still a lump that you could notice after 2 days, maybe there were other issues as well
you could double check your temperatures
it could be because (as you previously alluded to) he is in blue
or still something else (i don't know if corns are susceptible to swine flu)
your little guy will be fine, just be patient as he goes through the "treatment"

How long had he been on double pinks, how many meals? I'd order Nutribac from Kathy Love, just in case. It's only like $10 or something...

This is what I would do. Wait ten days. Start a new feeding schedule of every five days, with three days for digestion instead of two. Get the Nutribac if at all possible (what if you have a second regurge??). Never feed that snake while in blue again. If your warm temp in the viv, on the glass in the middle of the UTH, is in the 80-84F range, I'd bump it up to 86F.

Just to be safe, I'd go back to a half pink for one or two meals. Then two thirds. Then a whole pink cut into thirds. I'd do maybe four meals of whole pinks in three pieces before moving on to 1.5 pinks, also in three pieces. If he's been on double pinks for a while, (the regurge wasn't his first or second double pinks meal) I'd do a few meals of one and a half pinks, then move back to double pinks, _small_ pinks, though, cut in half.

Then, as he gains weight, on up through peach fuzzies and fuzzies, cut into thirds. I've tried feeding hoppers in thirds, but it just gets too gross, so then I move to slitting the back and both sides of the mouse, pretty heavily, instead. Not deeply, just lots of slits.

I'd continue to use Nutribac for one year. I'd continue to heavily slit the mice for one year, or until he is on weanlings, whichever comes first.

Hi Nanci, He has been on double pinks for 4 meals? He wasn't in blue when I fed him, I just noticed he was in blue the day he regurged. I had been keeping a close eye on him because the last time he shed was Mar 5. I try to keep my temp at 85.8, but it fluctuates a little. I have it on a rheostat.
I will start him on meals of 1 - 1.5 pinks then, and make sure to cut them up. (eww)
Thank you so much for your advice. I really really really appreciate it!
