One of our fish died!

Elusive

Totally irrelevent.
One of our two tank-raised clownfish died. The couple were destined to be together, but apparentlyone was suicidle Starsky and Hutch, best of friends, Starsky was probably the female, because 'she' was the biggest, but apparently she had some problems. I was watching T.V. Then, all of a sudden a giant splash occured, the dogs are scampering around and kept staring at SOMETHING. So I went to check it is out, I found starsky, our beloved clown fish, dead. She was only in our tank for atleast 2-3 months. She had carpet dived and probably was too much of a drop, because when I picked her up, she was still. I thought, well, maybe she still has a chance, and I put her in the water, she floated on the top and nothing happend, I left her for a couple minutes and when I came back she was sinking and the current was pushing her everywhere. I scooped her out with the net and threw her away. I broke the news to my step-mom today and she was devestated. We'll be going to the pet-shop later this week to find Hutch another beloved. It's the least we can do.

In memory of Starsky, our beloved clownfish.

Aww I'm sorry that happened. I had a Nemo(he even had a funky fin) and he died the day after I got him. When we bought him from the store he had just been shipped and they hadn't even got him out of his box when we bought him. I think it was alittle too much stress, going from shipped to the store then an other hour car ride and then a new tank. I was very upset. I still haven't bought a new one yet. Good luck with your new one, hope all goes well.

I'm so sorry--I am very attached to my fish, and can not imagine how hard it would be if one of my favorites died--it is hard enough when the others die.

Aww, so sorry for your loss. I've had some carpet divers as well. My mbunas seem to fly out of the tank when the lid is off.

Good luck with another one, but can I just throw this out there.....if you're going to a pet store to get another fish, a few weeks in QT is highly recommended. It's even more devastating to place a new fish into your established tank and end up losing everything. I've seen it happen way too many times.

Good luck, though. I'd love to see photos of your tank if you get a chance.

Alright, here are some pictures.

This is my favorite fish, a Mandrin Dragon, we call him Sid. :)

R.I.P little buddy

What a lovely tank, but I'm so sorry for the loss of Hutch. Just be sure to get a smaller clown than Starsky and hopefully they'll do well together.
I ADORE your mandarin!! How long have you been into SW?

As a dedicated reefer, I HIGHLY suggest getting a grounding probe! It'll take in free current, and that's the reason for a good bit of jumping and lateral line IMO. I don't want to be Mr. Knowitall, but that Mandarin looks terribly thin. DT's Phytoplankton used daily will increase your pod population a ton. And 'pods are what keep Mandarins fat and happy! Love the leathers, zoos, and mushrooms! You're doing a great job. My only warning is to get some 'pods up for the Mandarin. You can buy "Tigger-pods" and others to feed live direct, but a little DT's will build a huge population in your tank, and benefit the inverts!

I agree. Most mandarins never take prepared foods and once they exhaust the 'pods in any given system, they are destined to a slow death by starvation. Only people I've seen who've had long-term success with them were people with BIG reefs and an attached refugium for growing 'pods.

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that the mandrin is actually not doing good, he's still my favorite but we got another mandrin dragon because we liked them so much, but she (we assume) was really not a nice fish and bullied on everyone, we recently removed the fish and put her in a different tank, a 45 gal that is basically our back up tank in case of a spike.

Sid is still recovering and yes, we have tons of pods, he just isnt eating. We've been using a syringe and putting our arm in where he is and giving him pods. I know that we have them because when we shine a light when the lights off we see tons of them.

I'm sorry to have you guys think we are neglecting him, we are very watching him constantly, making sure he eats. He was fit and healthy for the longest time until we got Polly, the other mandrin dragon. I know he'll be fit and healthy in no time.

and BTW, we are going to get some new rotating jets so we can get more of a current, we are doing fine, but I like bigger and better :). I'm sorry to make the wrong impression of underfeeding our fish, he was just in a little trouble and we are nursing him back to health.
