Opinions on Western Hognose vs Kenyan Sand Boas?

Tom, how are your KSBs to feed? (Tom has an _excellent_ collection of KSBs- if I was going to get one- he'd be the person I'd go to. I was so close at one time, but then I decided to stick with just the corns).

Mine are chow hounds & will meet you at the top of the tub.

I just noticed your location, I'm slow it didn't connect when you mentioned the show. Where is Montana's first show going to be held? If it's not too far, I might try to go. My boyfriend is originally from and still has family in Anaconda.

She's been just the sweetest, most trouble-free snake ever.

I'm just saying- hold one before you make the decision!

Beautiful! I'm anxiously awaiting the hatching of two San Felipe locality rosies I have reserved from a local breeder.

I really miss my last girl. Being desert snakes, a nice hunk of slate and a heat lamp is a great way to get them to display. I kept temp control seperately and only used the lamp when I was there to watch. I could pretty reliably get her out to bask by flipping the light on.

Here is a great website with pictures of most known localities and a lot of good info...

I couldn't give a higher recommendation for a first Boid. They are wonderful snakes...

Now to find some room for another try at a captive bred hognose lol...

The show is going to be in Bozeman on August 28th from about 10am to close to 8pm

It's going to be a pretty small expo. I imagine not too many people will attend as I'm not sure how well they've gotten the word out. I'll give you the link to the page though :)

Thanks! I was actually able to find a post for it on Fauna. Bozeman is probably a bit far to go, especially for just a day trip. It would take not quite 4 1/2 hours to get there. I'd be very interested in hearing how it is though, might go next year if they have it again. The closest Expo to me is in Salt Lake UT, I've only managed to get to it once but have plans to go this year, it's on the 8th and 9th of Oct. They are definitely a good place to go if you want to see and hold some of the reptiles you can usually only find pictures of online.

Thanks for the info Tavia, I actually make trips to Salt Lake a few times a year, so maybe I'll get lucky and it'll land on the same date ;)

And I must admit the Rosy Boas are very beautiful and very inciting.. but I just can't get that little sand boa out of my head! I am in love with strange unique animals and everything about them seems lovely :) I'm holding off on anything new until I can see if I'll be able to make it to that expo, but it's terribly hard knowing there are 3 beautiful fat little baby sand boas sitting at the pet store down the road.. I've been checking the website and it seems like they just got them in a week or so ago. I have my eye on the bog female with the beautiful orange pattern

I have never had an issue with a Western Hognse. The ones I have had in the past were extremely docile and a favorite to hold with my younger neices and nephews.
I recently picked up a male yearling that does like to huff and puff but as soon as he is picked up he stops and is perfectly fine.
Westerns ( if ) they do strike, seem to do so with a closed mouth anyway....at least that has always been my experience.
Love the Kenyan Sand Boas as far as size and color but they tend to hide in their substrate almost all the time....
I am sure some have had different experiences but I vote for the Western Hognose

Well, spoke too soon! Looks like the BF and I will be taking a weekend trip to visit his family and will head over to Bozeman for the expo.

if you come to the Expo in Bozeman, stop on by and say 'Hi'. I will be the crazy guy with a hundred corns and a thousand cockroaches. A bunch of local breeders will be there. If you are looking for reptiles, they will be there. We will be next to Montana Rainforest.

How was it guys?! :)

Unfortunately, I was stuck working a 10 hour day on the 28th and couldn't make it ):

But on the bright side I am currently in the process of buying a 2006 male Whitewater het albino Rosy Boa from 4riscorn here on this site. I'm very excited and he looks like a beautiful snake :)

I had a western hog nose for a while. He was constantly restless, stopped eating. Didn't seem to like being handled. I ended up selling him to a reptile store because I didn't know what else to do to get him to eat or calm him down.
