But science cannot prove a negative...so technically, the supernatural can never be disproved....it can only be proven or remain in the shadow of skepticism and speculation. This is important for both the believer and the non-believer to remember.
Science CAN disprove. In fact, that's practically the basis for what is or isn't science. If there's no way to disprove something, then it's outside of science's scope. I don't think too many non-believers lose sight of the fact that the supernatural/paranormal is outside of science's scope.
Humans have always had the tendency to fill the gaps in our understanding with gods or supernatural forces and entities. But these gaps have become more and more narrow and less and less numerous. We're never going to be able to identify "first cause", but if science ends up filling most of the gaps sufficiently far back, then it's not unreasonable to presume that there just might not be a gap for a god/supernatural force to fill at any point. :shrugs:
