Paper towel substrate fail

For the first time this year I tried keeping hatchlings on paper towels in sandwich size tubs. But I went to feed tonight and several tubs had an unhappy snake, empty water bowl, damp TP hide, and a soaked paper towel from the snake wrinkling the towel and managing to get one corner into the water bowl so it wicked all the water out. I think I am going to switch to aspen.. Grrr.

that sucks, those little ones really must have wrinkled the towels up to get the corners into the bowl lol...

hope the aspen works better.

I am using tea light candle tins (the thing that actually comes ON the tea light) for water bowls. I have superglued them to the side of the deli cup. Then, I can tear a napkin in half and slide it under the water dish. If they go crazy, they can still make a mess, but overall it's been working quite well for me. It works especially well when I have them with a soda top water dish glued to the side. And I don't fill the water dishes all the way.

It's that they like to get under the towel, and that's where most of them are pooping anyway. So I think for me aspen or carefresh will work better.

I've been using those party beer cups cut down to the size of the sandwhich box... I think they hold a bit more water than a soda top would.

Oh I'm sure they do! Which is part of why everything gets all wet! ;)

I sent off a hatchling yesterday who's been out of the egg for less than a month but who's never been on aspen. Apparently, when her new owner put her in the new cage, she started striking at it! :roflmao: Hatchling are so funny.

But also, they can still make a mess with the soda tops. *shakes head*

When they get in the soda tops. It's all over. BUT I can fill the tea light tins half-way and the snakes can still get in and curl up but when they do, they don't overflow the water everywhere. But I don't have much trouble with them getting the napkin all over the place and into the water bowl and wicking out all the water when they hide under it.

I changed the ones that I fed last night to carefresh. They should be able to soak without spilling, I can fill their bowls halfway and it still should hold them without overflowing.
Silly baby snakes, I think they just want me to pull out all my hair. We won't eat! We want live pinkies! We like to make a mess! Our clutches only hatch when WE want! :headbang:

Hee hee. I know. I like having hatchlings. I've sorted out what works for me in terms of keeping them clean and dry much better this year than I had last year. And I enjoy taking a little time-out once a day to clean up after them. However, after having hatchlings for two years, I am now quite certain than I NEVER want to have a LOT of hatchlings! 30 and under is enough for me!

I find that no matter what you do, some snakes, both young and old, simply love splashing all the water out of their dishes within the first 24 hours of their viv being cleaned. I have a couple of snakes (males...naturally) that I have to "dry out" on an almost daily basis. And it's not that they're tipping their water dishes...they literally splash the water out. Silly snakes....

Jen I know exaclty how you feel. I use the sandwich containers too. For water bowls I use 2 oz portion cups. They can't spill them because the lid on the tote prevents it from being tipped over. But..that doesn't stop them from getting the darn paper towel in the bowl!! I change the stupid towels pretty much every day on most the wee ones tanks. Very aggravating! LOL
