Paypal fees

Do you think it is ethical to be asked to pay to cover paypal fees?

This has always been an interesting subject for me. When making a purchase should you pay any additional expense over the purchase price to cover paypal fees??:shrugs:
 
As the seller, I suck it up. It's nice when someone sends payment as a gift, so there isn't a fee. But I'm not selling the big bucks snakes, so 4% isn't a life or death amount, anyway.
 
But in a situation where I was hit with a surprise fee as a buyer, I just paid it. What's a few bucks over the 20 year lifetime of a snake. Not to mention, the way I ship, it probably just covers my materials.
 
I usually send as a gift, but when a fee was needed I usually paid the fee unless instructed by the seller not too. When getting the money in here if not a gift I eat the charge. But as Nanci said I aint selling big buck snakes yet.
 
Does that mean that the ppl that I may buy from have to pay a fee thru paypal if I send it as payment owed? or instant payment?
 
The majority of breeders eat the fees as part of doing business. Besides it's a violation of paypal policy to charge to cover the fees.
Yes the gift payment option is great. However it can only be used so many times before they catch on. One other problem with the gift option is that you have no paypal protection.
 
Thank you for explaining that. Since I dont sell that way, I had no idea. I learned something today! I will make sure to ask about that next time I buy snakes! Honestly, its something I never gave a thought to. :(

I would think if ppl wanted that fee covered just add it to the price of the snakes or shipping or something like that. I feel bad now for the sellers I have bought from for not knowing this about paypal.
 
I've been asked to pay extra to cover the fee several times when buying, but I've never asked anyone to do so when buying from me. For some reason it won't let me send money as a gift-I'm guessing because my credit card is linked to my account instead of a bank account?

If it's disclosed in the ad,it's one thing. You know up front that you are expected to pay additional $$. To be surprised by it is another.

I can't find 4 % in the fee schedule. Guess the extra 1 % goes towards handling.;)
 
Does the buyer protection really work out for live animals, anyway? The only case I've heard of it didn't.
 
yes, not a nice surprise when, for some of us, most?, are scrapeing together the money to get something we Really want. or in some cases, make a negative in your account so that you end up paying that fee as well.
 
Not sure if I should answer a flat 'yes' or 'no' to the poll 'cuz I feel like if it's stated in the original purchase price & the buyer agrees to pay the extra then fine,but it should not be a surprise.

The paypal protection is for fraud. Yes there are people out there in the ciber world wanting to take your money.

Very well stated. IMHO it needs to be disclosed in the ad. Not in some TOS or hidden in a check out.
 
Given the state of the economy, I as a seller am not about to squabble over the loss of a small percentage of the purchase price that is advertised. Heck I should be happy that somebody is willing to send me some money.
Paypal is a convenience to both the buyer & seller. It greatly expedites the sale. Sure you can sit around waiting for snail mail to bring you a money order.
 
I can't really vote because I don't see it as a question of ethics at all. It is a question of PayPal rules. If you don't follow their rules, somebody will eventually complain and PayPal will threaten to drop you if you don't comply.

Personally, I feel ANY agreement about fees / payments is ethical IF it is stated up front - and both buyer and seller agree. Everything in life is negotiable, IMHO.
