people with diabetes that own snakes

this may be a odd thing to ask but i have had type 1 diabetes for 4 years i have just gotten my first corn snake and i was wondering if any one with diabetes worried about getting bit and it getting infected?

haha, a little late to consider now that you already have it, eh?

haha i never was a planner and somehow i do not think that this will change that issue so life is all good :)

well, ya, I assumed you'd keep it no matter what, I just figured it was funny.

I'm not a planner either, I only planed on getting one snake and look how that turned out.

Yes, this happened to my grandmother...

Because people especially with type 1 Diabetes have poor circualtion to their extremities (hands and feet). So where a normal person gets a cut, it bleeds and the blood helps clean out the wound to a degree. Then good circulation brings healthy blood to the site with antibodies..... This doesn't happen in Daibetics as it does with non-Diabetics. Gang Green sets in easily, it is a very nasty thing.

about 11 years ago she almost got one of her feet amputated but she had a heart attack a little while later and passed away. This is really hard for me to type this, she was the sweetest person alive. I loved her more than anyone on this world. I spent alot of time with her and I think I was her favorite and her oldest grandchild. I justed wanted to say welcome to the forum and I agree with everyone on here. It would be alot worse getting an injury from something else than a snake bite. As long as you keep your wounds clean there is no threat at all. I've been bitten and I've been wounded by alot worse things.

Nice seeing ya again Susan :) take care,

Lil. :)

those are some nice snakes, i would probably get another one but i just really don't have the room but hey you never know what will happen :)

Too funny lol...

yeah, I have a ball python and plan on getting a corn in a month or so when it starts warming up but there are so many I want, I think I'm going to wind up with a few lol...

Oops forgot to put in my last post that yes I have diabetes :( but oh well, there are worse things for sure lol.

Lil. :)

to all my fellow snake lovers thanks so much for your help and advice and for all those who have lost a loved one due to diabetes bless ya all and for those of us who have it keep believing that a cure is on the way

I'm sorry about your grand-mother. My daughter is type 1 she is 38, she can't get a pedicure anymore, she has to go to podiatrist. She has neuropathy in her feet and legs, her eyes are getting very bad. It's so sad to see her change her life around. Sometimes people tell her don't eat that or drink this, she just cries. Diabetes is a nasty disease and not always controlable.

i have type 1 diabetes but i am pretty lucky about it...its not hard for me to control at all and i hardly notice it any more...as far as the snakes go i have 2 and i never even thought of it as a problem...im not really any more careful than a normal person should be...if i get bit i would just clean it and move on...havnt been bit yet though...i have been bitten by my dog though...not to bad he was only playing.

Hello and Welcome!!

I will echo what others have said here, there are many other types of wounds that I'd worry about more. I'm a Diabetes Nurse Educator, by trade. I'd simply look at being bit as another opportunity to test your blood sugar :dancer:

Enjoy!

-Tonya

 That is great Tonya. I'm diabetic and I often wonder why I can't be bleeding when I need to be. I'll have to keep a glucose meter in the snake room.

Too true lol...

I think a snake bite actually hurts less than that stupid needle being poked in your finger lol. I hate that dang thing. I have little pin pricks all over the tips of all of my fingers and I'm running outta places to poke lol...

Susan, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm so sorry about your daughter. She is definitely in my prayers as well as you and the rest of her family. She sounds like she's having a really bad time with it. I pray one day they will have a cure before too many more people suffer from this terrible disease.

The only bad thing about my diabetes so far (knock on wood) is that my legs and feet are very slow healing and get infected sometimes if I get a cut or scrape. Sometimes I can't feel my toes, and having to check my sugar 4 times a day, oh and of course not being able to eat everything that is sooooo good to me lol (I think this is the worse thing about Diabetes lol j/k). I do it anyways though sometimes lol. I used to have to take insulin 2 times a day when I was pregnant with my last two children but now I'm on pills. It seems to keep it somewhat regular.

To everyone on here that has Diabetes or has had someone die or is suffering from Diabetes, ya'll are in my thoughts and prayers.

Anyways, take care guys,

Lil. :)

my grandma as type 2 diabetes. she has to do insulin and tests just like eveyone else. she's had several oprations on her legs though. she's a happy lady though. goes day to day like a trooper. She's been a little bit down because of my grandpa having cancer, but he's doing well. he just complains about being bald! XD we're sperated by the miles but always keep in touch and visit when we can. i wish everyone the best with their diabetes (and snakes)! my love goes out to those who lost someone they love!

Just treat a bite from a healthy, domestic, cornsnake JUST like you would any other scratch. That's all it is - really.

A little of the topic, Sorry to hear about so many peoples losses!
So clean the wound with peroxide and then some neosporin and a clean band aid???

I have also been told by my local reptile dealer that if a snake is a bitter try cleaning hands well with purrell (alcohol based hand wash no need to dry)Like they now have when you go into the hospital. Paul from Gillards reptiles in Cambridge ,Ontario told me to clean hands with the purelle before handling the snake that snaps and once it gets that taste it' won't bother you anymore. Heck he even said rub a little rye whiskey on your hand and it may bite once more till it gets the taste of you but never again after that!??
Bill

well not sure.. but the snake might like the whiskey and you'll end up with an alchoholic...

hahahahahaha :puke01::rofl:

I have read that people with large, feisty retics sometimes keep a bottle of drinking alcohol nearby in a spray bottle. If the snake bites and won't let go, they supposedly spray it in his mouth and he lets go immediately. So I guess they don't like it.

I have never tried this (could have used it with a few kingsnakes I used to have!), so can't say whether it is true.

That would mean I would have to buy the cheap stuff, not using my good scotch on a snake bite. ;) well that is if I was going to use it on myself.

It does work with kings!

I was diagnosed about 3 years ago with type I. Been bitten twice (one corn, one king) since with no issues.

Most circulation issues/neuropathy come after many years & if you keep a close eye on your BGs & A1Cs, many many years.

Take good care of yourself (I know, it's hard) and wash the wound (like you would with any cut) & keep an eye on it. I wouldn't recommend peroxide since it actually destroys healthy tissue as well as the germs.

A little late in the reply 'cause I've been insanely busy with work and things lately, but...yeah.

I've had Diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes) for sixteen years and have had snakes for well over a year, as well as a couple other reptiles as a wee Gina, and haven't encountered any problems. I mean, just following basic hand-washing safety hasn't steered me wrong. :)

That isn't to say I haven't had issues with OTHER animals in conflict with my diabetes. Case in point: I use an insulin pump and work at an animal hospital, and usually once a week there's always someone's cat that ends up trying to play with/tear up/claw at the pump tubing. I've even had a dog go after my pump before! :eek1:
However, snakes have never caused me trouble. :p
