One more to go, and I don't even have the fun reward of decorating it- it's just a spare. This is taking all day!

I have an idea! I can put the thermostat probe in one of the unoccupied bins! I can decorate it just as if there was a snake in it. The thermostat is a Herpstat ND. I've had a regular Herpstat on Maizey and Jake for seven months now, with a thermometer back up, and the thermostat has always read within tenths of a degree of the thermometer, so I know the thermostat's thermometer is accurate.

Thank you so much for the information, Nanci. Is this an economy rack or one of their full "bookshelf looking" racks?

I do prefer long tubs over tall ones as well. I have noticed however, that with the addition of sticks and branches to my snake's tubs they have been much more active. Let me know how your snakes like this rack, especially your corn. If I bought something like this it would be for my adults and possibly a hondo or two.

Those tubs look great! I really like the plastic leaves. I may have to add some of those to my snake's tubs. I'm guessing the craft store is the best place to get them in abundance!

It's the Economy Plastic Rack, so the one with open sides. I want there to be light (and air circulation).

The vines are from the snake store.

Of my current snakes, only two aren't climbers, Jake and Inez. They are both hiders. Lila perches up in her tree vine every night.

The rack will house all corns.

For the AP rack, you need to put the thermostat probe directly on the heat rope. The way the rope zig-zags through the shelves, I have the thermostat probe taped with foil tape directly in one of the vertical heat rope slots. So the probe is on the side and there is no contact with the actual tubs and they can be removed easily.

It's not really feasible, or accurate, to have the stat probe inside a tub.

I run it currently at about 86 on the Herpstat and measure almost the same temps inside the tubs right over the heat rope slot.

Nanci, its a heat cable that runs through these economy racks. I wish the cable ran a little farther back into the tubs though, it seems like it sits barely on the edge of the tubs. In the 32qt model anyway.

Flagg, thanks for that bit of info, I guess I never really thought it would be accurate if the temp reading was on the outside of the rack. Will definitely be trying that!

It sounds like they have two methods of placing the heat cable- one for warm rooms/people that are afraid of thermostats failing, which it wounds like is what you got, and normal, 1/3 of the way in.

Hmm, I don't remember being given an option of heat cable placement. Just wish I would have gotten it further in, seems pretty useless when its that far back though. My snakes never lay in that section of the tub, ever. I wonder if thats why my snakes rarely eat in the winter, because I keep my place at around 65 degrees.

It is heat rope, both of mine are the standard placement belly heat, which is an inch or so in from the back of the tub. Seems to work fine for me, the corns hang out in the back when they want the heat.

As for the probe placement, it's not "outside" the rack, just outside the tubs. I have it on the 2nd shelf down, but directly on the actual heat rope, taped into the groove on the SIDE panel where the heat rope is threaded through to the next level.

Hmm nanci could i just say that you could have saved yourself a bit money and not got the soldering iron ... Just put a screwdriver into your gas fire and heat it up ...

I am just tight ... penny saved is a penny earned lol

What gas fire??? You mean the firepit I want for Fort Tort? Excellent thinking!

Seriously, it was a huge PITA making the holes. Hours. My hand was going numb. There are 50 holes at least on each side, x 4, x 4! The soldering iron was worth it. Plus, what if I want to solder something some day??
