Poor Fort Tort

It's looking dismal out there. But it can still freeze up till March 1st, so there's not much I can do about it.

You can see the winterized burrows- the one on the right is blocked off, and the one on the left has a heating pad on a thermostat, because we're still expecting freezing weather next week, and it also has a heavy layer of grass that I cut, for insulation, as well as a thick wooly rug door to keep drafts out and keep light out so the torts stay asleep.

My gorgeous hibiscus froze, of course, as well as most of the palms. The Chinese Fan Palm is making a come back, but I don't think the date palms or the fig will make it. One grass stayed green all winter. I cut back a bunch of the lemon grass, but I think it's going to come back. The bare magnolia in the back had one flower so far, and I was out of town and missed the peak. Hopefully there will be more!

Lots of these guys skittering around, though!

Hopefully in a couple weeks I can start planting again!

Thanks for looking!

Heh aw Nanci, Shame some of the plants froze - looks like it was a palace!.

Cool that you see little lizards running around too! Most interesting wildlife we get around here is a fox!.

You could have one, too, it just takes back-breaking hard work! I'm building one for the boxies in April, but I'm only going 12x12.

And a gorgeous climate with a lack of predators! :grin01:

I wish I could have something like that. Sadly, the weather is too cold and I have three cats, on top of that we have all of the wild predators that would kill them :( I'd have to surround my own Fort Tort with chicken wire and heat lamps.

I've seen Fort Tort in full bloom and it was a sight to behold, shame about the plants. Hopefully you can get it looking lovely again. Do the tortoises eat the plants?

That looks like a great habitat for your torts. The animals in your care obviously have a very nice life.

Thanks for posting winter photos of Fort Tort :) It's nice to see the full life cycle of the Fort.

Do the tortoises eat the plants?

The tortoises are completely self-sustaining out in their enclosure. They eat the grass and snack on the mulberry leaves that they can reach (like little cows!) and the hibiscus flowers that fall. I plant petunias and verbena and other edible flowers for them. I give them cuttlebones for calcium.

You can't see it in these pics very well, but they have an electric fence on the outside.

That was kind of horrifying to relive! I don't know how the tiny rescue got in the list, but oh well.

well Nanci, I am sure this will bloom again in a few more weeks. The plants that did not make it I am sure new ones will replace them.
I look forward to spring photos. :)

Awwww Nanci I'm sorry, they are pretty depressing photos....For what its worth I do see some GREEN..LOL

Can't wait til April!
