Quesion bout Rearranging Tank

Hi,
I was wondering.... I am getting ready to clean out my tank completly in a few days and was wondering if i could have my heat source in the middle of the tank. Anubis spends most of his time on the cool side but where I have a long 40 gal tank would it hurt to have the heat in the middle and have 2 cool sides for him. Would it stress him out to have this done or not. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreicated. Tks all

I don't think it matters as long as you have a hide in the warm end and at least one hide on a cool end. And make sure the cool ends actually stay cool.

I think that because he spends more time on the cool side it's best to leave the UTH on one end- he obviously likes cool and that gives him the most gradient- even though you have a huge viv.

personally i think it would be better to leave the heat mat at one end as then you have a definate hot end and a definate cool end and it will be easier to set the viv up this way as you will be able to have one hide each end. just my thoughts.

hope it helps

I don't think it would be detrimental to your snake. However, I do think that in order to achieve a proper thermal gradient, it would be beneficial to keep the UTH at one end of the viv. This will prevent the UTH from heating the viv in 2 directions. With the UTH in the middle, you will be heating both ends of the viv, and while the extreme ends may be cooler than the middle, you will have an easier time achieving a proper gradient if the UTH stays on one end, and as your snake gets further from the UTH, it gets cooler in the viv.

Also, having it in the middle may virtually "cut-off" the tank to your snake. If your snake feels the need to thermoregulate, and approaches the middle only to find it getting much warmer there, he may retreat back to one side, and not venture to the other. He may not overcome that sense of warming and go beyond to "explore"...he may simply settle for the one end he is in, and isolate himself from the rest of the tank...

Just my $.02...

40 Gals is plenty of room. I don't think it will hurt to move the mat. In fact I think it keeps life interesting for them ,to have a new environment to explore every now and then.
Just let them settle in first , then reintroduce yourself. I think it reinforces a constant for them ,therefore a bond. Mad in I.

But of course...You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to tyflier again.

I agree and have one of my usual crazy questions. What size is the mat? If it is an 11x17 mat placed in the middle, it doesn't seem like it would give enough gradient. Depending on how it's placed it only leaves at the most 15" on either side for a gradient. susan

Thats a really good point.
I always assume everyone monitors the temps. And never think to ask the obvious.....Doh!!!!

Tks for all the replys ev1. I dont' have a UTH i have a heat lamp. <Spot light> I guess I will leave it like it is. May just rearrange the viv a lil to spruse it up a bit. But nothing drastic so Anubis will feel uncomfortable. Tks again all.
