Question about a snakebite

Hi Guys,

I haven't been on this forum in ages. Which means that all of the advice that I got here Four years ago must have been perfect! I am happy to report that my little baby SneakySnake is now over 4' long.

Here's my question. On October 16th. of last year, when my husband was putting Sneaky back in his cage for his mouse, he got bit. No fault of the snakes tho, he was almost in "blue" and I have tried and tried to tell my husband how to put him in, but he wants to do it his way.

The snake turned loose immediately and there was ONE speck of blood. We washed his finger with alcohol and antibacterial soap. 15 minutes later we couldn't even find the spot.

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago. My husband developed a rash on both hands, a bad rash. Swelling and cracking open. Today he went to the Dermatologist and She blamed the snake. Has anyone ever had a reaction to a cornsnake bite, that took 3½ months to show up?

Thanks So Much for any help.

Sounds like a typical dermatologist. Blah, heres a prescription... ha. I know how that is.

I don't know of ANY thing related to a corn snake bite that can take 3 1/2 months to show up.

I blame it on a different type of soap, some kind of fabric, or change in detergent.

Curious, what was the diagnosis?

That's what I thought. I called it B.S. myself, but I do have to keep a certain amount of peace in this house.

No change in any of the things that you mentioned.

She said that the bite made him allergic to something that he had never been allergic to before, but did not bother to elaborate on what that might be.

No oral medicine, but a prescription for Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream.

I realize that the good Doc & hubby need to blame it on something, but I hate Sneaky being the scapegoat for something so long ago.

I have heard of people being allergic to, or at least having itching and redness from snake saliva immediately after a bite. And I have heard of people having allergies to snake aspen. But I think it's a crock that your husband would develope an allergic reaction on BOTH hands months later. How???

See, that's the thing. NOTHING at all in October. We couldn't even find the spot.

I guess I should have added that he has never been fed wild mice or anything except frozen white mice.

Had to find a reptile friendly Vet., just in case. Knock Wood.

Now I guess I need to look for a reptile friendly Dermatologist?

well betamethasone is essentially glucocorticoids, which is a topical anti-inflammatory thats prescribed for anything, i was hoping to inch closer to a diagnosis with the medicine.

I wouldn't sweat it lol.

She did say that it should look better in two weeks.

IF NOT, you know the drill......Come back, and I will try something else.

GRRR.

Thanks.

Well I do not know anything you can use in this sake, just felt like saying that i hope you husband soon gets better :D

Is he taking Benedryl?? I would. I had a huge allergic reaction to nickel once. I took Zyrtec, my normal allergy meds that I take every day anyway, in the morning, and Benedryl at night. Plus put on the topical steroids.

If it is caused by the snake bite why is it on both hands. Having worked for a dermatologist I am no expert but would wonder??? Are you sure nothing changed hand soap, laundry soap, lotion, what about at his job? Does he ever wear rubber gloves?
Hands also reflect stress and change in the body, like stress related eczema. Something called dishydrosis, blocked sweat glands in the hands can be nasty.

I don't buy it. I can't imagine an allergic reaction showing up 3 moonths later, and a cornsnake bite causing a reaction that was not there before...I just don't see how it's possible.

I have had reactions from snake bites, but they are within a couple 2-3 days, and usually because I didn't clean the wound completely or there was a tooth or something in there. But on BOTH hands 3 months later...I just can't fathom how that is possible.

I would challenge the dermatologist and ask him/her to explain just how, exactly, a reaction can develope as a reult of a bite that was properly cleaned. Ask them to explain what it is in snake saliva that they think has the ability to create an allergy where one did not exist before. I would like to hear that explanation...

No freakin' way it's the snake. I get mauled by picking up my pet rats on one hand, it doesn't hit my other hand. :p It sounds a lot like my husband's dermatitis after he's gotten his hands into something *nasty* at work, so I'd say it's gloves, soap, or something he was up to when his hands broke out.

Nope, nothing has changed soap or lotion wise. Can't be work as we are retired.

He had been taking Benadryl before going to the Doctor, she said it wasn't doing any good, so to discontinue it.

I will NEVER believe it was the snakebite.

I'm beginning to believe that the worst thing he did, was mention the snakebite. IF he hadn't, then she might have been forced to figure out what the real cause was.:angry01:
