R.I.P Steve Irwin

I love the Croc Hunter. His shows were very entertaining and educational. He will be greatly missed.
My son and I watch his show together all the time.

My husband called and woke me up this morning to tell me the news. I was shocked to say the least. Not at the way he died, of course, I always thought some animal encounter would be the cause of his death, but at the sheer loss of a great animal conservationist and family man. I feel terrible for Terri, Bindi, Bob, and all his family at the Australia Zoo both human and animal. He will be greatly missed by the whole world. I have a feeling though that Bindi will definitely be following in her Dad's footsteps.

R.I.P. Steve

Wow, what a loss! I heard about this after reading the newly started thread here on cornsnakes last night. I was so shocked that I couldn't even make a post and just ran to tell the family.

My sons grew up watching his shows and I always enjoyed them too. One of our neighbors was from Australia, so they'd been back to visit family and went to the Australia Zoo where they saw him taping for shows. How fun that would have been. What a loss to his family, the Zoo, and the world!

I feel so bad for his entire family... and especially for Terri, Bindi and Bob! Earlier this year, I named one of my snakes "Bindi." It made me think of Steve's darling little daughter. When she'd be on one of Steve's shows, it was fun to see how much love he had for her and for his family. His shows were very entertaining and educational too. He will be greatly missed!

does anyone know a way we could all make a "condolence" card and mabey send it to the crew at the australia zoo?

i think all of them deserve to know how much of an impact steve had on the Reptile/animal world.

This is very sad and a great loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children. He truly made an impact in getting youth and others interested in wildlife. I enjoyed watching his shows! He was a genuine adovacate for animals, reptiles...wildlife in general. He will truly be missed. I hope that his legacy will be passed on to his children, as his parents passed on to him. Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin!

What the Christ. Steve Irwin was my frickin IDOL when I was a kid. He's the reason I fell in love with snakes and reptiles, and he made me want to work with them. I think if Steve Irwin wasn't around, I wouldn't be as passionate about animals as I am.

I just feel so terrible for his wife and kids, to lose him in such a freak accident. Of all the animals that everyone said would kill him, no one ever thought it would be a stingray.

God, I'm depressed. He was so cool. :'( I always secretly hoped I'd be able to meet him in person some day. Everyone knows I'm a wierdo and watched his show all the time.

Crikey.

I was soooo upset when I heard this morning :( He was one of my all time fav reptile enthusiasts on the telly.. I would cancel things to watch his show.

I really hope Terri continues to put through his conservation methods! His work will never be forgotten....

I feel soo bad for her and wee Bindi... What an amazing couple they were, and Im sure they tought everyone something or other about reptiles. Urgh Im lost for words... I'm just so shocked and dismayed!

We should deffinetly write a letter or something to Terri and the staff at Astralia zoo. Just a small rememberance and appreciation. Im sure Terri needs all the support she can get!

This is a very sad day for all snake lovers.

My thoughts and prayers are with Terri, Bindi Sue, and Bob Irwin, and also for all animals and all of Steve's fellow Australians.

I know Steve is meeting lots of snakes up in heaven and wishing them "G-day, mate."

We'll miss you so much, Steve-O. Fortunately we have your programs to remember you by...and I know your loved ones will keep working for the animals.

I agree that a condolence message from the community he was a part of would be appropriate. Anyone on here have any insight in how to do this?

For my own part, what a shock! We've been watching Steve since his show first aired in the U.S. While I didn't always agree with his methods, he really did a lot to shed a light on some often misaligned creatures. My kids grew up with him as a household staple. He will be missed and my family's prayers are with his family.

Yeah i think we should send a letter to Terri and the zoo.

I will always remember steves catchphrases like Crikey its a whopper Or This guy could kill ya with one bite and you naughty boy

In his memory my royal pythons name has benn changed to steve-o

RIP Steve-O

There is a place on Animal Planet website in which you can send condolences. Right under the picture, there is a link to it.

Memorial Fund

Memorial Fund- at bottom of article

Looks as though AP is going to set up a memorial fund in honor of Steve. It will fund conservation efforts worldwide.

"DCI is looking at the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which we'll affectionately call "The Crikey Fund" to honor Steve's passion and exuberance for conservation and the animal kingdom. This fund will allow people from across the globe to make contributions in Steve's honor to support wildlife protection, education and conservation. The fund in addition to contributions by DCI will also aid Steve's Australia Zoo in Breewah, Australia as well as educational support for Bindi and Bob Irwin. "

I cant believe it, I really cant. This guy is a legend. I used to watch his shows all the time, he is brilliant. Such an unfortunate accident, the rescue boat team performed CPR for the whole journey to shore, where the doctors noted he was dead. It is such a pity, his work for reptiles will still live on, and will never be forgotten. R.I.P steve, you legend.

Some may not know, Terri ran a tiger rescue and rehabilitation center here in the states long before she met Steve. From my understanding it was going broke at the time of their meeting but has since been funded in several ways.

I posted this on another forum this morning...

For a man that caught his first crocodile at the age of 9 to die from a stingray attack at the age of 44 is almost unbelievable for me. This is a huge loss for conservationists and animal lovers around the world. Not to mention the people he knew, touched, worked with, of course his family and last but certainly not least THE ANIMALS!

I understand not everyone liked Steve Irwin and maybe those especially in or from Austraila. The fact of the matter is, Steve was very passionate about what he did. Some people found his antics entertaining and some found them annoying. I feel that if nothing else it was REAL. I honestly believe the excitement he showed was sincere to his heart. This man loved all animals (not just reptiles), loved educating people and truely had a concern about the environment and was trying to do something about it.

The Austrailian Zoo, although fairly small at 58 acres and primarily focused on reptiles, is in the process of expanding and developing another 250 acres! That's HUGE, folks! I'm quite sure this project will continue forward but with much sorrow, grief and disbelief.

Let's face it, when Animal Planet slowly became "Reptile/Snake Planet" this was by enlarge due too, The Croc Hunter. How many people across the globe got into keeping reptiles because of all these shows? My personal assumption would be quite alot. These shows helped to take the fear out of people (especially children) and educate them about these amazing animals we all love.

There are few people in this world that I've known, heard of or read about that had/have even half the passion and impact this man had for his job and what he did day in and day out! My sympathies to all he touched and especially his family. This is a great loss, in my humbled opinion.

I'd like to add, that back in the mid to late nineties, when my interest in snakes was being rekindled, I sent several Emails to Steve. Either He, or a member of his staff replied to every single one. I remember asking him about the serpent he was referring to as the "Fierce Snake", and the response from him was almost as if he couldn't believe that someone was interested in it! That particular Email went on for about a week, and I found that it was indeed a subspecies of the Taipan. He was a cool guy and I for one will miss him. :wavey:
