..for snakes! I'm always trying to come up with easier/better housing options so I thought I would post a few of my creations.

The first picture is an old bookshelf that I converted into 2 cages roughly the size of 20L's. Sliding plexi doors and heat. :D

The second is my first homemade "rack". 20 Rubbermaid tubs and 3' heat tape in the back.

The third is my newest project. Took all of a few minutes to build. (took longer to read the instructions hehe) Ordering heat tape for this one soon. Going with 2 strips of 17' heat tape on the back. Right now I'm thinking this one can hold 27, 15qrt Rubbermaid containers, and on the top some 28 qrt Steralites. I'll update this one in a week once I've got it all worked out :grin01:

Lol, I use the wire racks too. I like them because I can adjust them every year as I upgrade snakes into larger tubs and add hatchling shoe boxes.... They work great for tanks as well.
 
You've done a really good job on those! I like them! :)
Just out of curiosity, does the metal in the wire racks affect the flexwatt? I know it's not advised to put a UTH or some flexwatt on metal because it's a conductor - how does it do on wire?

Exactly why I went with the wire rack this time! Can't adjust those wood racks :D. It would be nice though if there was somewhere to buy extra shelves though.

Honestly not too sure about how it will affect anything. But seeing as the temperatures won't be exceeding 85 anyway, (controlled by thermostat) what harm could it do? :shrugs:
 
Hi just wondering how u heat the top bookshelf vivs 2 thermostats or one as i am in the process of getting something like your viv made up i take it your using heat matts

I believe Suzy was referring to the fact that if your UTH or flexwatt develops a short it will energise the whole rack.

Well still... There won't be any exposed live metal that will be touching the rack. I always make sure to wrap any exposed portions in electrical tape, and the clips for the tape come with protectors. :)

On the right side of the bookcase I drilled holes the size of the UTH cord and enough to slip a thermometer probe through. I then cut the UTH cords near the plug and slipped the cord through the hole and rewired the cord into new plugs. The heat pads are secured with plexi and sealed in place with silicone.

I am not saying there were any exposed wires when you were done, I am saying never underestimate Murphy.
 
So what kind of beer are you drinking (in pic #2 at on the left lower corner of the rack)? LOL just joking nice racks....

Seriously, I'm just posting to say I really like how your bookshelf mods turned out. From the image, it looks like a very nice presentation cage. Kudos - it's a lot better than anything I could have done......

How hard was it to waterproof? You've actually got me wondering if I should put a few cages here and there in my bookshelves as a hidden "surprise." We have bookshelves EVERYWHERE and an extra snake cage here and there on "display" might be interesting. ....if only I could nail two boards together at the right angle.....lol.

Wow Taylor you have talent! I really liked the bookcase too but l would hurt myself just picking up any necessary tools for the job. :)
The other too racks are great too. Wished you where closer for you to help me make some racks!
 
Thoes wire racks your using are EXACTALLY what they're using at my work to hold coffee boxes... and i'm pretty sure they've got extras. lol...i'mma go find out.

Pfft, flip flops are a way of life for me. :p

And for waterproofing. I'll have to go back out and look at the stuff I used. I sanded everything down, and applied 3 coats of the polyurethane(? I think ?). I used clear silicone on all edges/cracks.

lol! Thanks Tim! I actually have fun doing this too. And you better believe I had my dad's help on a lot of this! haha. Too bad the bookshelf and the wooden rack shoebox rack are now unused. They're going to the garage for now. If I don't find a use for them before college they might just end up in the garbage? :(
