rats or mice?

is it the same?? i was given some baby rats from the shop cause the size is more appropriate for my corn. he ate one but i was wondering if there's any difference between feeding rats or mice.. thanks!
 
I would feed mice. Rats are high in fat, so they are only really good for getting skinny corns back up to a healthy weight. Also, since corns will never be able to eat adult rats, the rats you'd be feeding have less bones and more cartilage than mice, creating calcium deficiencies. I'm sure feeding rats here and there is no problem, but as a staple you could run into issues.

Rats are generally very appealing to cornsnakes. It may be difficult to switch your snake away from rats once it has been fed rats for several meals. You might want to look for some similar-sized mice and alternate.

the problem is that they have no mice of that size.. it just goes from fuzzies to small adults (which is way too big).. my snake is a very good feeder, never had problems eating, never refused a meal, never regurged.. i don't think he'll have any problems switching back to mice.. he's a dump ;) well, we'll see! :)
 
I feed both here, all the snakes here will go back and forth from rat to mouse without an issue. Rats do have a higher fat content and can make adult corns fat. But in my opinion I like rats for young growing corns. This topic as well as many more on here is a to each thier own thing. Rats are more expensive if you do not raise your own. It is what ever works best for you and your snakes. All is good advice but is also just a guideline. Snakes are different just as we are, what works for someone elses collection might not work for yours. Also I firmly believe keeping snakes is only as hard as the keeper makes it.
