I know nothing about the people, but, just looking at the website, I already am wary of them. IMO, it isn't a good sign when a place is casually selling Alligators, Iguanas, Snapping turtles, and Reticulated pythons... Among other species that should seriously give one pause. :shrugs:
Why? It's up to the consumer to know their states laws, and do their research on the animals they want to purchase. They even have a blurb that states, "That's why we offer education on care and the best products to care for your new family member", sounds responsible to me to have the info available for those that want it.
There are a lot of great pet shops that sell the same animals... Ever hear of Prehistoric Pets in Cali? That place is awesome!
Wow, I've been checking out their site, and they have all of my top 10 lizard want list, and for great prices! I dig the Armadillo Lizards and the Crocodile Skinks and wanted them for quite a long time. They call the Croc something I haven't heard before, but they have a nice one. Did you see the Gold Tegu and Sail Fin? Those are pretty rare to find. I'm actually impressed with their selection, so if you do order from them, you'll have to give us an update.
Danielle, he's looking for a lizard not a Snake. I don't think anyone here breeds Armadillo Lizards...
And I respect that. I just have difficulty making sense of responsible herp keepers who breed and sell such species as American Alligators. I don't doubt they exist, it's "just my opinion." =)
If you buy from them, Urban, definitely keep us up to date on their service and quality. It'd be great to hear of another good herp store in the West! =)
Do you know how many private keepers there are in the U.S.? I don't. Do you know how many the average keeper of alligators keeps? I don't. Do you know how many the breeder produces and sells each year? I don't. Do you know to whom this breeder sells them, under what conditions, and what constraints? I don't. Do you have any right to judge this breeder without ANY of the above information? I don't...and neither do you.The irresponsibility I find in it is, who CAN and WILL buy and take proper care of these animals? Are there seriously THAT many devoted, private alligator keepers in the US? And "all those" alligator keepers--do they seriously keep as many gators as a snake person does snakes, a gecko person geckos, etc? I have the same thought on the big Iguanas, to a lesser extent... They're big. Alligators (and, as I've heard it, Iguanas to an extent) are dangerous. They're both big, and at least one tends to be very needy as a species. Hence, why I have difficulty believing there are REALLY as many devoted keepers of such animals as there are for other species.
Who really cares what your opinion is? I'm not trying to be rude, but really, your opinion does not count when deciding if a breeder is responsible or not, unless your opinion is based ion actual experience with the breeder. My only qualm with the giant snakes is the casual feeling in the selling--but I suppose there's no other real way to sell snakes, so you could chalk that bit up to my (admitted) naivety on the subject.
You don't know any more than I do what this breeders selling habits are. You don't have a clue as to who their customers are nor what the average experience level OF those customers are.I'm not telling Urban not to buy from them because of their sale of such animals. I'm just saying that I, personally, hesitate when encountering people who freely breed and sell "overpopulated" (so to speak) and heavily "mistreated" species. Yes, it's the buyer's fault and (ir)responsibility if they take on such animals without educating themselves, just like with any other animal. My issue here lies in the fact that, despite most of their potential customers (AFAIK) for such animals being naive, uneducated idiots who just want something "cool", they still breed such animals in large enough quantities to be regularly available. People that regularly breed these kinds of species give me that same, sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that I get when someone talks about how they want to breed their mix-breed cat "just" because it's nice. Or when someone too stupid to adopt an already fixed dog has puppies because they were too lazy/poor to get their newest mutt spayed, and talk about it like it's a perfectly normal and acceptable thing to do.
If there are really enough responsible alligator/iguana/etc keepers to warrant this kind of demand, then I'll shut my mouth and reevaluate my take on the subject. Actually, I'd be relieved to find out that such breeder-supporting communities of such species exist. I have the distinct feeling, though, that I'll be holding on to my opinion for a while yet.
With absolutely no basis to decalre anything of the sort. If you actually took the time to LOOK at the website, you would have found the caresheets, recommendations, vet listings, forums, and contact information, as well as the price list of what you consider the "irresponsible animals" that fairly makes most of them not "beginner pets", but investment animals.I know nothing about the people, but, just looking at the website, I already am wary of them. IMO, it isn't a good sign when a place is casually selling Alligators, Iguanas, Snapping turtles, and Reticulated pythons... Among other species that should seriously give one pause
Don't those uber cheap prices scare anyone but me? When I see reptiles priced cheap I wonder about a few things. Is the animal WC, healthy, is the breeder out of room, or time to care for them? WC animals are always cheaper or should I say usually. A breeder in over their head also offers cheap prices because their either out of room, out of time, out of food, or all of the above. Post a thread on the BOI and ask about the company and owners names there. Scumbg breeders often change their company names like underwear![]()
I don't know anything about the breeder's habits or husbandry. But a quick glance through the pricelist didn't seem too bad or completely underpriced to make me suspicious. But again...I have no real information on the breeder...
Robbie, I saw that albino boa. If you look through the text price list the albino BCI are $650 and $800. Not sure what the deal was on the photographed one...
