Rescued Anery

I rescued an Anery a couple days ago from a home that was beond nasty. They advertised the little guy as free to good home with adoption fee. I got there and was shocked to see a beautiful little Anery living in the worst of conditions. He was in a 5 Gal tank with no substrate, no hide, no heat or lights and a soda cap for a water bowl. To add to it maybe 5 or so crickets hopping around in there with him. I was only interested in the snake but got the tank also to prevent some other critter having to live in it. It was tossed in the trash soon as I got home crickets and all.

This is a classic example why some people shouldn't procreate. Setting my temper aside to insure I left with the Anery, I handed over the $30 fee and left tempted to come back and burn the house down. I understand getting things and then changing your mind or not being able to handle the needs. But there is no excuse to ever make a living thing live like that. There was a laptop sitting on the desk next to the snakes torture chamber and it was on the net. If these people had one ounce of self respect let alone respect for other living things they could have researched what they were getting into.

Here are some pics of the little guy he is pretty small and very thin I tried to feed him a tiny day old pinky today and he wanted none of it. I'm committed to making this little guys life a good one no matter what. I hope it doesn't come to force feeding, but from his reaction to the pinky I think it may be the case.

Oh Wow. Glad the guy is in good hands now. Best of luck getting him to eat. Check Nanci's threads as she has good luck getting them to eat. You might want to let him settle in a few days before trying again. A boiled day old pinkie head might be it.

yeah figured I'd wait till Sunday and try the boiled head trick My fear is that the little guy has been eating crickets and will only want them I sure hope that isn't the case. he is the sweetest little guy just sits in the palm of my hand and he is never in the hide. always roaming around.

You should probably stop handling him until he feeds for you. Even though he is not afraid, he is still stressed, and burning calories.

Agree with you Nanci I feed outside the Viv not much choice at that point. I hope he is just not hungry ATM. I would hate to feed him crickets but if I have to to sustain him I will, till I find a way to get him eating mice. hopefully Sunday he will eat. Without knowing when he last ate I'm already in a hole with this little guy. I am 100% committed to saving this guy An being a Marine corp vet giving up isn't an option. will keep this post updated

As Nanci said, letting him settle down in a good environment is the first step. Even a change for the better is still a change, so a week or so with as little disturbance as possible would be good. His body condition isn't terrible, so you've got time before worrying too much about eating.
I'd go with either a live pink or a small boiled pink in a deli overnight and try not to worry. He's healthy and you're giving him a new start.

I went to to home I got him from this morning. I asked if they know when his last feeding was. The bad news is he has been eating crickets the good news he ate 2 the morning I got him. I gave him a few days before trying to feed him. I hope on Sunday he will eat I am going to break my rule about feeding in the Viv and just place the offering outside his hide for a day. He was out and roaming last night a lot more then usual I'm hoping it was hunting for food. I figured if that's what he was doing placing the offering in his viv so he can hunt it down may just work. Placing it just outside the hide he is sure to see it

Would scenting pinkies with crickets help? They've definitely got a scent to them and if that's what he's been given, he might associate that with food. I'd imagine a pet store (or bait shop) that has crickets could give you a piece of the egg carton crickets use for housing and that might work for scenting (if you don't have a friend who has an insectivore). Similarly, if he's been getting dusted crickets (some stores automatically dust them when you buy them), maybe a dusted pinky would be a better choice initially, because if I can pick up a slight scent to the Reptivite, I can't imagine a snake doesn't.

good idea. I have crickets for my Bearded Dragons. I want to try without first, but that could for sure work Thank You Alli

I can report good news on the little anery today. I tried to feed him a pinky head he would not take it. I then poured boiling water over it slowly still would not take it. Dipped it in a soda cap full of dish soap and rinsed it off good, he ate it rite up. Ajax triple action dish soap. I'm totally blown away by this Thank you Nanci for your post elsewhere on this subject. I will see how he does on sat next week and hopefully i can start feeding him the whole pinky the week after he only weighs 6g before his feeding today. I'd like him to reach 8g before I start him feeding on 2g pinks.

I was really convinced corns do not eat crickets because they cannot digets their external skeleton. Did you see him eat the crickets or are they just gone and do you assume they were eaten?

I was going on what the past owner said he said he saw the snake eat 2 of them who knows. I'm just glad I got him to eat a mouse head. I have seen many tiny snakes eat crickets so I know they will eat them its not what I would choose to feed mine except to save its life. He will get another pinky head on Saturday I hope he eats it again.

Just an update I got this little guy to eat again today half a pinky no boiling no soap just pinky. I think he is gonna be ok Im happy because he was so thin his shin would wrinkle

It's probably a good idea to soak him in luke warm water if he is getting wrinkly again. It is hydrating and stimulating.

Little fella ate for me today no problems and he is starting to look good. I'm very pleased with his progress
