Sierra was a 7 year old AQH who came up with cushings. We did not know what it was at first since everything started with a leg and turned into 2 legs and hooves and then all four and we could not keep weight on her and she was getting sores in odd spots. For 2 months she went on fighting, on Monday the vet came out again and noticed that the dimples that horses have above their eyes was missing, means brain swelling. X-rays showed her body had started to take away from the bones and she was foundering in both front. The family decided to put her down since she would be living a life of pain otherwise. I had been helping them through this since day one and I got rather attached to her. I stayed with her today while they put her down and until they loaded her up. The family was unable to but wanted someone who she and they knew to be with her.

I have seen a lot of small animals get put down while I worked at the vet offices but I think this was one of the hardest things I had to watch. I was also in charge of allowing their other horse to say goodbye which was really hard to watch also.

Attached is Sierra. (Golden Diva)

Very sorry to hear this.

I would be a crying idiot if I did what you did.

Thanks for being brave.

That is so sad.... I used to have two horses, both of which died within two months of each other due to unrelated, unpredictable ailments (a severe stomach ulcer and a broken leg). Losing a horse is so sad, not only because of the time and effort put in to a good horse, but because horses have such wonderful personalities and big hearts.
I'm sorry that you had to go through that :(

I was after the fact. I cried like a baby onto the shoulder of one of the horses I have been working with for over a year. She just stood there. I love animals. The kids crying made it harder though, I felt like I was playing musical people while trying not to break down myself.

salvadorian Im sorry to hear that. Its never easy and it being so close together must have been really hard. Horses are heartaches but they are worth it I think.

Thanks. Helps being able to write it out and not worry about people trying to hug me. I tend to cry when people hug me.

I was so sorry to read this. After having lost my equine friend just 4 months ago her loss is still with me. :(

R.I.P. Sierra. Your pain is now over & you can rest.

I am very sorry for your loss. You gave Sierra the best possible chance at getting better, and a gentle ending. She will thank you from horse heaven.

I'm glad you could be there for her at the end, Nichole. It must have been such a relief for her to finally be free of her pain.

Thank you. Sorry about your own loss, what happened if you don't mind talking about it.

Thanks. I wish we had caught it sooner though, it might have been manageable then but it went on for 2 months.

I'm glad you could be there for her at the end, Nicole. It must have been such a relief for her to finally be free of her pain.

Thanks Nanci. She looked better once the drugs hit her. It was so hard to see her in the pain everyday.

My mother's horse has cushings...it's a hard thing to watch. Good for you for being there for her.
I know that horses can live with it if its caught soon enough and the signs are random. Her's came on all at once and we had no idea. One of the other horses in the barn has it and he has good days and bad months it seems like but his was found when he was 15, which is a normal age. Its still shocking that she was 7 years old and this hit.

That is so sad :(

I always hate to see a horse suffer in any way. At least now Sierra isn't feeling any more pain.

R.I.P. Sierra

So sorry for your loss!

It sounds like such a long and difficult time for both of you. So sorry it ended the way it did.

My deepest and most sincere condolences on your loss...

I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

My old guy will be 20 in March. I'll be hugging him tight the weekend.

Thanks everyone. Emily thats kind of what I did today. I spent 5 hours at the barn just cleaning and brushing and being around the horses. I don't know what Im going to do when I get my own horses and have to go through that. She was not my horse and it still cut me up. I guess I allow myself to get attached to them, which I guess is not a bad thing but its still hard. The other horse of theirs her "sister" is doing better then I thought she would. I think it helps that she has been bonding with one of the two main horses I work with so I think he is helping her.

BTW, due to a nice little message I got I would just like to say this is not a pity post. I know there are many horses owners on this site and I am sure that some of them after reading this went to make sure that their horse had the dents above their eyes. We can all learn from others mistakes and heartache.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss..I have never had a horse but I can bet the attachment was strong..It always hurts when we lose a family member or pet..Sending warm wishes your way..RIP Sierra
