Thats as close as I can get to iding this little guy. Does it count as field observation when they come right up to the house after a good rain?

But probably not when you pick them up to take their picture huh...

i think it counts - unless you go to the pet store to take photos.
i wish the snakes would just come up to my house.
 
Hmmm... that's an odd looking little species! He almost looks like a little African house snake. I'd love to see more pictures of him if you have them.

gelshark you should have seen this little one just come right up. Amidst four mean outside cats too!! I bent over him and he just looked up at me as if to say "yeah, and you think what you're lookin' at is weird."

Sorry Robbie, I only have one other pic of him. I wish I had gotten more and better but my camera at the time sucked. :(

It's all good!
I know out there they're probably considered "trash snakes", but I just may have to pick up a couple of those one of these days. They're very interesting looking little critters! (I love the crazy straw, too. LOL)
 
In Louisiana, like Storeria species, Virginia species live in the subarbs of cities in relatively large local population pockets.
Once in Monroe, Louisiana, (1992-ish) on a sunny warm March morning....I caught about 10 Rough Earth Snakes along a drainage canal through the downtown area. Under paper or cardboard that caught the warmth of the sun.

They're also livebearers like Storeria and Thamnophis.

People murdered and slaughtered them as "ground rattlers".
