Sani Chips?

Joejr14

Grand Bubble Burster
I've been thinking about switching from shredded aspen to sani chips, but the only place that seems to even have them is PJ Murphy---who is the producer. Through an email I was told they only sell in bulk----80 bags. I certainly don't need 80 bags, nor do I have the cash to buy that many, so does anyone have any idea where else you can get this stuff?

When I googled "sani-chips" a bunch of stuff came up. I don't know if there are different manufacturers, or what price range you were hoping to find. Here's one link from my search:

Sani-Chips

If you try the stuff, I'd like to know what you think of it.

Harlan sells lab grade Sani-Chips, but that may be as hard or harder to obtain than direct from PJ Murphy. You can try a local reptile show and check with all the feeder breeders, that's where I get Harlan lab blocks and occasionally Sani-Chips. Or find a feed store that carries Nepco Aspen Chips, I've bought those a LOT cheaper and they seem identical to Sani-Chips.

I believe Harlan requires an order of $100 to buy direct from one of their distribution centers and pick it up. That's like 15 bags of Sani Chips I believe. Unless you can also use the lab blocks, or other types of bedding or animal feed.

It's also sold in very small, very expensive bags at PetSmart or Petco. Like $7 for a couple quarts. In bulk bags it's about that much for 2 cubic feet compressed. I paid $3.95 for 2.5 cubic feet compressed of thr Nepco Aspen Chips. I couldn't believe it was that cheap.

I've only found small bags, but I thought I saw Carol post that she switched to sani-chips. You may want to check with her.

My 5 corn snakes are all on Sani Chips currently, and I like them better than regular aspen shavings. I got the Harlan lab certified sani chips and they have basically zero dust, and they're so small it's really easy to spot clean. The chips are like 1/8" square. The snakes don't seem to burrow under it much though, perhaps because it's so much smaller it doesn't hold a tunnel like the normal aspen shavings. Or perhaps it's because they are more settled in now than when they were new.

The small chips do tend to get all over everything and I have to vacuum often, but that was the case with aspen shavings as well.

I'm not going to waste my time with those little bags of bedding, I want it in bulk. I've got 20+ adult tubs to clean and those little bags won't go very far.

Really seems like I'm SOL.

You don't have any feed stores nearby? Or reptile shows? or feeder breeders?

Feed stores? Not really. There are a few, but it doesn't seem like they'd have Sani-Chips.

The closest reptile show is in White Plains, NY---and last time I was there I didn't see anyone selling any bedding.

No feeder breeders that I'm aware of.

feed stores may carry Nepco Aspen Chips, which are identical to Sani Chips. Nepco is in NY so it might be possible. At my local reptile show the feeder breeders don't have the Harlan sani chips or lab blocks out displayed for sale, but they sell it to me if I ask and if they have extra. $10 for a 2 cu ft compressed Sani Chips.

Or if you can use $100 worth, check with Harlan, they have distribution centers in the northeast and they usually will deal with you with a $100 minimum order if you pick it up yourself. Pet rat owners deal with Harlan all the time to buy lab blocks.

I had a lot of trouble finding it at first also, but now it seems I'm finding it all over.

At the Hamburg show i always see bags that are 3-4 cubic feets for like $15

Superior Enterprise used to have it. I just checked their site and it appears that they don't sell it anymore thought they still have a small pic of it under their bedding link w/the regular aspen. You might try contacting them. :shrugs:

I get mine from a huge feed wherehouse called "Dean's Animal Feeds" it's about a 45 minute drive from here. I have a feeling they get theirs from Harlan Teklad because they also carry Harlan's rodent feeds which my mice LOVE and do very well on. Puts Kaytee to shame for sure. Joni Garcia actually found them and passed on the info.
I would contact Harlan Teklad and PJ Murphy and ask about local distributors. Just looking at PJ Murphy's map of distributors, it looks like there are a few not too far from you. http://www.pjmurphy.net/locations.html Not too close, but not too far either. Especially if you stock up. I love the Sani Chips but still hate feeding on it. Even if I serve on a paper plate, they still end up dragging their mouse on to the chips. I'm going to try to start "dry thawing" my mice to see if less Sani Chips will stick to them.

Unfortunately, the closest PJ Murphy is their actual headquarters and they told me they only sell in lots of 80 bags.

Perhaps I'll contact Harlan. It seems that shipping something so heavy would be a waste of money....

Not so fast...I've hooked up with the SC distributor and have been able to order them on and off at about 10-15 bags a time. I'm hoping to have them available for sale on this site...just need to iron out a few more details...

Did PJ Murphy give you any info on that yellow dot in New Hampshire? Looks like there is a distributor there. :shrugs:

I believe Joni got our distributors number by contacting Harlan. Good Luck!

Don't really want to drive 2-3 hours each way for Sani-Chips...., but I guess I could at least find out where they are and go from there.

I did find some website that said they occasionally have Harlan's Sani Chips (some weird rat lady), so I suppose that's always a possibility.

Check feed stores around universities or colleges. They may carry the Harlan products for the school labs. Harlan may be able to tell you of any feed stores that carry it. When I checked with Harlan the only dealer in Illinois that carried their products was a feed store near University of Illinois in Champaign, which is a good 2.5 hour drive from Chicago, so I never went there.
