Screen Tank lids....

I'm looking in to getting a new screen top for my little guy's10 gallon tank. The one I have now is old and looks like it's falling apart around the edges!

Does anyone have any screen covers that they have or used they have liked or disliked?
If so please list them and where you got them! I was looking at this one in Petco the other day just seeing what they had.

Thanks!

That's what I use (or very similar). As long as the it clamps down tight, you wont have a problem. I have taller viv's, but if you have a shorter one, you might want to make sure it's not rough to the touch if your corn can reach it and rub his head/nose on it.

I just use a basic rectangular screen lid (link below to one similar to what I use). There are metal clips available that clamp it down to the tank. I didn't like messing with the clips so I just cut thin strips of velcro and placed them every 10 inches or so around the edges of the tank and inside the screen lid. Fits like a charm and the velcro holds the lid down tight so the snake can't budge it.

Oh how neat! I never even thought about that! Do you happen to have a picture of how you have it lines up with velcro? I know you said how you have it, but a picture will give me a better idea of how you have the velcro and such.

Unwittingly we housed two together in a 10 gallon aquarium last year (before we knew better) with a screen like that one. The two snakes inside, Sparks and Shadow, escaped the night of Dec 10. We found Shadow on Dec 27 as we came home and surprised him in the foyer. Sparks is still missing almost a year later. I believe they got out because of the gaps where the screen hinged - just barely big enough for them to squeeze out of. I'm not saying that this is the only thing that could have gone wrong. You might want to consider a single screen top though so that there aren't gaps like that - especially if you have a small snake. Just my .02

We have one like that but there was a gap all around & it didn't close tightly so (this was the 3rd attempt at a lid) we just got door jam insulation. One side is sticky & the other is foamy. You really have to push that sucker on, works quite well.

As per request...I space the velcro about 10 inches apart along the edges, but each of the four corners gets three pieces. I cut it lengthwise and it fits down along the edge perfectly. As far as matching up the lid and the tank, you can just eyeball it or measure if you like to have things exact.
I'm not sure what order the pics will be in. One is the lid and tank side by side and the other two are of one corner of the lid and the corner of the tank it matches up with.

Each corner on mine has a slight gap. That is the only place with any gaps. Hatchlings that are really tiny might be able to squeeze through. There has to be literally hundreds of things that could be used to very easily cover the corners to prevent escape. This lid that I have on my 20gal fits better than my 10gal did and they were the same brand.

Seems like the 10 gallons vary in size a little. I have a few 10's and a lid that fits snug on one of them has a gap on the others.
I recently found a lid at walmart I like. Instead of sitting on top and clipping on it fits into the inner rim and had four sliding clips that lock under the lttle edge most aquariums have.. It was about $7.
I have had one baby escape from a 10 gallon I thought was snake proof so mine usually get a heavy book or two placed on top for extra security.

I like tanks that have screen tops that slide into place and then snap shut. Usually there's a special grove where the top fits in, so the lid can't be pushed up out of place, and then the two snaps on top make sure the snake can't slide off the top as well. Very snug fit

I use the one pictured in zwatt's post only I use the clips, not the velcro. I use solid one's on my 10 gallon and hinged on my 29 and 55 gallon. I've never (knock on wood) an escape with any of them.

I use that same lid for the only tank I have that houses my BP. I really like it because it hooks on the inside lip and its easy for even my kids to use and get shut correctly and easily. It also leaves no gaps that I have found.

I use the hagen locking kind, both boys will sit there and push like crazy to get out, never had an escape yet! Heres a couple crappy pics =)

The white knobs are the locks. I can pick up Treasures viv by those knobs (thats around 70 pounds) and the lid doesn't move at all =)

I have never seen the lid and securing system you described as a hagen locking one. I couldn't find it on-line. It looks like just what I was looking for.

I'm currently using clips and they really aren't conducive to opening and closing Skittles' home without stressing her from the noise.

Picking one of those up for my 20 gal long would be a great Christmas gift for her.

Happy Holidays Everyone. :santa:

Skittles can't actually hear you putting the clips on, but she can feel the vibration. I've used clips for a couple years now and I assure you Skittles will be fine, unless you're using a hammer to lock them in place.:grin01:

Merry Christmas!:santa:

i just use books i've been told it's an accident waiting to happen but the lip of my 29 gal is weird so clips don't really work, meh harry potter hasn't failed me yet :grin01:

i do like the veldro idea tho i'm deffinatly going to be looking into that for my lil king

wish i could edit my posts...

well i forgot to mention i have both plastic and metal covers and both work fine ^_^ and i've used the inner rim one too for my mice but i really wasn't to fond of it but i t was ok i like outer covers better

That only works if you 1st wave your feeding tongs over the viv and say, "stayith locked-e-osa":sidestep:

Plexiglas lid

Just wanted to show an alternate method of securing slithering types. I found a large piece of 1/4 inch plexiglas and made a lid for a 20 gal and a 10 gal aquarium. I drilled a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in it and chamfered the holes to remove any burrs that might scratch the snake. I keep it all down with some home made metal clothes hanger "catches". It was completely free since I found the plexiglas - sanitized of course first. I know Lowes and Home Depot carry plexiglas, but it is sort of expensive. It might actally be comparable in cost to the commercial screens though. I like the way it keeps the viv from drying out - that was the reason I went to plexiglas instead of screen (I keep my RTB in the 20 gal - and he likes moisture more than my corn, but I think the plexiglas keeps my corn from drying out as quickly).
