securing temp probe to tank...

This might be a really DUMB question, but the digital thermometer I got had a little sticky piece covering the probe. Pulled it off and tried to secure it to the glass tank bottom and it wouldn't hold. Went and got some blue masking tape (for painting). Will that hurt the readout of the temp? I have it set at 82 now and it seems to stay there. I have it on a dimmer switch. Just for those of you not using one that might, mine has a green light that comes on when it's OFF. I assumed (my fault I guess) that a green light meant ON. But no. Just for future knowledge for anyone who might get one.

Thanks for the info.

I use a small piece of painter tape to secure it, too. I think it's good because if it peels up and sticks to the snake it has such a low adhesion that it'll just come right of the snake with out any harm. And it shouldn't affect the read in any way.

You can just put a rock on top of it, I found that the extra insulation raised temp right at the probe a few degrees, but 2-3°F in one spot isn't much to worry about. Just remember that you're aiming for a temp readout a bit high.
I had the same problem with my rheostat also. Better low temps than high, at least.

Thanks for the help. I went this morning and it was at 80.8. We'll she how he/she does. I fed her the other day and she went right after it. The previous owners told me it had been somewhere between 10-14 days since the last feed. I bought 2 mice but only fed 1. I may try again in a couple of days. The mice were a little on the small side I think. Otherwise, how long after eating should I look for stool?? Thanks again.

I don't think I'd have tape in the viv with the snake. Don't some people secure theirs with a dab of aquarium silicone?

Mine aren't secured at all- they are just free-floating, but I _do_ have a piece of tape where the cord goes into the viv to keep it lined up.

I think that such a low stick tape like painter's tape poses no problem so long as it's checked on periodically. Even if it did come off and get stuck to the snake it would come off so easily. Now duct tape or even regular masking tape would be a GIANT no-no. Either one of these could really hurt the snake if it got stuck to it.

I secure mine with elmer's glue. It sticks really well, but it is possible to unstick it and peel the glue off the probe if you want. Just make sure it's very dry before putting the snake in.

The warm end should be around 85 degrees. And you should feed every 7 to 10 days for an adult. Don't bother looking for the mouse to be coming right back out. Snakes have kind of a "back-logue" thing going. It could be weeks.

My adult usually defecates 2 to 3 days after eating (my mice are on the small side too). I don't know how much it varies between individual snakes though.

I have found that Blue Tack is as good as anything, I just push the probes (thermostat & thermometer) together on a smallish piece on the bottom of my viv under her hide and then press in a bit of aspen on any exposed Blue Tack. Cover the whole area with about 2-3cm of aspen and there you go.
