have you guys ever measured the length of a shed and then the snake to see the differences? i didnt know if it would be any different or not. my corn just gave off a full shed noes to tail and it measures 23.5 inches. so i was wondering if that is his true length since its hard to ever get him measured any other way. i know it seems like a stupid question if theres a big difference but its just something that would be neat to know. thanks for any info.
 
A shed and the actual length of the snake are different. Sheds are longer by a bunch. I usually use a fabric tape to measure my corns and that's just to get a guesstamate.

alright i figured that. i havent handled him in a week since he was in blue and tonight i seen him in mid shed so i watched him peel the rest off and it was neat. so i measured it up and was like theres no way him being a july hatchling that he was 2 feet long. i think hes around 15 in actuality. so thanks for the reply. anyone else can feel free to say what they think to. i like to learn.
 
As medusa said, they aren't the same. Depending on the snake and the particular shed, the shed skin can actually be up to 20% longer than the snake. I made the same mistake with my corn before I realized my 4 month old wasn't 20 inches =P. Don't worry about accurate length measurements because the only way you can get a very close measurement is if your snake doesn't move whatsoever (which rarely happens). As long as you can guess within an inch or two you're fine.
 
There's a program (can't remember for the life of me where it's at) called the snake measurer (from SerpWidgets, if I remember correctly). You can take a picture of your snake (doesn't matter how curled up they are) with something for size reference next to them that you know the size of and measure them that way.
 
The best way that I've found of measuring is a ring binder. The book I use to keep notes has a ring on it that anything up to 2cm diameter could easily slither through put a ruler right next to it on the cover and measure away. Would only work up to about 6 months unless you find a really long one maybe an art sketchpad or something but like I said its worked for me.
 
well as you say that you could probably get some aquarium tubing thats clear and a bit bigger than your snake around and let it crawl in and get a somewhat accurate measurement. i guess. but im fine at the guesstimate.
